Effect of childhood obesity on admissions for respiratory disease

Abstract: Aim The purpose of this study was to assess for an association between higher body mass index and disease severity, morbidity and mortality in children admitted for an acute respiratory distress and failure. Methods A single‐institution retrospective cross‐sectional study performed in the United States evaluating paediatric patients, 2–20 years of age, admitted for diagnoses related to acute respiratory distress and acute respiratory failure. Main outcomes include disease severity as assessed using the respira… Show more

“…As for the mean duration of mechanical ventilation, compared to previous reports with a duration varying from 2–7 to 21−28 days, our cohort reported a mean of 9.57 days of ventilation 31 . It has been well‐described that obesity is an inflammatory state of malnutrition that can impact disease severity and outcomes, especially in adults 32–34 . In our cohort it was found to increase the risk of OTI and IMV (RR = 1.73, 95% CI: [1.10−2.72], p = 0.017).…”

[32][33][34] In our cohort it was found to increase the risk of OTI and IMV (RR = 1.73, 95% CI: [1.10−2.72], p = 0.017). In other series, it has been shown to increase the time of OTI but not necessarily increase mortality in patients with ARI and ARF, such as in our cohort.…”
