Effect of chlorhexidine on the shear bond strength of self-etch adhesives to dentin

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chlorhexidine on shear bond strength of self-etch adhesives to dentin. The crowns of 60 sound human premolars were horizontally sectioned to expose the coronal dentin. Dentin surfaces were polished with 320 grit silicon carbide papers, and were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 15). In group 1, two-step self-etch adhesive resin (Clearfil SE Bond) was used. In group 2, the surface was rinsed with chlorhexidine 2% solution prior to Clearfil SE bond applica… Show more

“…Regarding its performance as a cavity disinfectant, chlorhexidine presented with positive results in the majority of the studies [ 16 , 17 , 24 , 36 , 39 , 42 , 53 , 56 , 57 , 61 , 62 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 72 , 73 , 75 , 77 , 79 , 81 , 86 , 87 , 90 , 91 , 98 , 100 , 102 , 103 , 104 , 105 , 111 , 113 , 122 , 123 , 124 , 128 , 132 , 134 , 135 , 137 , 142 , 143 , 148 , 153 , 157 ], allowing for maintenance or even an increase in bond strength values. On the other hand, a few authors [ 14 , 15 , 26 , 27 ,…”

“…A cavity disinfectant’s effect depends on each disinfectant’s characteristics, as well as on the type of substrate and materials used for the restorative procedure. Besides its biocompatibility and antibacterial action, each disinfectant should also be able to effectively disinfect the cavity without affecting bond strength values and the dentin–resin bonding interface [ 13 , 14 ].…”
