Effect of chronic kidney disease on serum resistin level

Abstract: Our study is probably the first study in India comparing serum resistin levels of CKD patients vis-à-vis control subjects. Further cellular research may be needed to explore this relation.

“…Though most analyzed cytokines trended higher in Alport ECM, only Resistin, TIM-1/KIM-1, DPPIV/CD26, and Reg3G (regenerating islet-derived protein 3 gamma) reached statistical significance. Resistin, KIM-1 and DPPIV/CD26 have been associated with proinflammatory functions and are reported to be increased in chronic kidney diseases [4750]. Resistin is secreted mainly by adipose tissue and increases both the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 by endothelial cells and monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells via p38MAPK-dependent pathways [48].…”

“…We selected CAP1, a functional receptor of resistin, as a target for validation in the kidney tissue of IgAN patients. Notably, elevated resistin levels in chronic kidney disease have been reported in different studies and are associated with decreased GFR and inflammation 58 , 59 . CAP1 is essential for mediation of inflammatory action of monocytes and thus, has been suggested as potential target for treatment of inflammatory diseases 60 .…”

“…Its major sources in humans are monocytes and macrophages 2–4. In uremic patients, serum RES concentrations are elevated as compared to individuals with normal renal function 5. It has not been concluded whether higher RES concentration is secondary to reduced renal clearance or reflects chronic inflammation 68.…”
