Effect of Combined Inoculation on Biogas Production from Hardly Degradable Material

Abstract: The goal of this research was to appraise the effect of combined inoculation on the performance of anaerobic digesters treating hardly degradable material, and particularly the pressed fine sieved fraction (PFSF) derived from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Batch tests were conducted in mesophilic conditions in order to examine the optimal mixing ratio of inoculums. Mixing ratios of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100 of three different inoculums were applied in the batch tests. The findings indicated t… Show more

“…GB21-the amount of gas produced from 1 kg of dry organic matter (BSG), dm 3 The value of the reaction rate constant (k) was determined by the non-linear estimation of the experimental data (GB21) to the first order cumulative equation (Equation 4) according to [36][37][38][39][40]. Estimation of the best-fit parameters was carried out using the Statistica 12 software (StatSoft Polska, Krakow, Poland).…”

“…Chemical oxygen demand (g•kg −1 ) and ammonium (g•kg −1 ) were estimated using assay test kits (Hach Lange GmbH, Germany) and were quantified by a spectrophotometer (DR3900, Hach, Loveland, Colorado, USA). Free ammonia nitrogen (FAN; g•kg −1 ) was calculated based on the equation [31]: Euverink [20]. The methane content was determined with a micro gas chromatography (GC) device (single channel 2-stream selector system, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc, Waltham, MA, USA) equipped with a chromatographic column (PLOT-U).…”

“…">Problem ContextThe problem context indicates a research interest in the sustainability of the biofuel production processes. Understanding the interrelation between the two is essential for the future of biofuels since it is its sustainability, both economically and environmentally, which has created greater attention for biofuels among the many other alternative energy sources [80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90]. Since the possibilities in production processes depend on the type of feedstock used in the processes, several feedstocks are taken into account [91][92][93][94].…”
