Effect of combined lipid-lowering and antioxidant nutraceutical on plasma lipids, endothelial function, and estimated cardiovascular disease risk in moderately hypercholesterolemic patients: a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Introduction: Nutraceuticals are a good means to lower cardiovascular risk. Having established a reasonable pharmacological background, a new nutraceutical combination should be tested in clinical trials. Material and methods: This double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial aims to evaluate the modulating effect, in a setting of controlled nutritional habits, of a combined food supplement with DIF1STAT (based on red yeast rice with a very low content of monacolins, linear aliphatic alcohols and… Show more

“…The BP cuff was inflated to 200 mm Hg for 5 min and PV waveforms were recorded for 3 min after the cuff was released. Endothelial reactivity (ER) was calculated as change in the PV waveform area, comparing waveforms before and during hyperemia through the equation √PV2/PV1, where PV1 represents PV at the baseline and PV2 represents PV during hyperemia [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…PV displacement was calculated as a percentage change in the PV waveform area, comparing waveforms before and during hyperaemia using the equation PV2/PV1, where PV1 represents PV at the baseline and PV2 represents PV during hyperaemia [22]. This test has already been largely used to detect the effect of dietary supplements on endothelial function [23,24].…”
