“…There have also been 4 controlled (181, 220-222) trials and 1 uncontrolled (223) study of intermittent CT along with daily oral phosphate supplementation, given in an November, 1987 CALCITONIN AND OSTEOPOROSIS 383 attempt to combine inhibition of bone resorption (CT) and stimulation of bone formation through intermittent bursts of PTH activity. All 5 studies employing this combination have reported dramatic increases in formation surfaces (220,221), osteoblast surfaces (181,222,223), and osteoid surfaces (181,(220)(221)(222), and significant increments in histological total bone volume (220,221) and trabecular bone volume (181,222,223) after 6-12 months of therapy.…”

“…Thus, the effect of low iCT levels in white women, which will fall further after the menopause, will be to render the skeleton more sensitive to the actions of boneresorbing hormones. Several studies now show encouraging effects of CT in the treatment of osteoporosis (26)(27)(28)(29)(30).…”

“…Positive effects on trabecular bone volume were also observed in a small number of patients treated with subcutaneous salmon calcitonin and oral phosphate [38], although others did not find beneficial effects on bone mass-measured by video-densitometry of forearm radiographs-by adding calcitonin to a high calcium and vitamin D regimen over a 15-month treatment period [39].…”

“…Well before the introduction of teriparatide, calcitonin had been used in different combination schemes with parathyroid hormone analogs. Initial studies in this direction were designed according to cyclical, sequential ADFR (activate, depress, free, repeat) concept put forth by Frost in the late 1970s [115]; and employed a combined regimen with oral phosphate, given as an activator of parathyroid hormone secretion, and subcutaneous calcitonin in postmenopausal osteoporotic women [38,116]. A 20-30% increase in trabecular bone volume was observed on bone histomorphometry only in those patients treated for 6 months with both phosphate and calcitonin [116].…”
