Effect of comorbidity on urinary neopterin in patients with breast carcinoma

Abstract: Urinary neopterin is increased in less than 20% of patients with breast carcinoma. Moderately increased neopterin concentrations are also known to accompany comorbid conditions commonly observed in patients with breast carcinoma, for example, diabetes mellitus or complications of atherosclerosis. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of the presence of comorbid conditions on urinary neopterin. A trend for higher neopterin concentrations was observed in patients with most of the comorbid conditions, but… Show more

“…It may have resulted from co-morbid diseases such as atherosclerosis, malnutrition or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases that led to chronic immune activation [12,18]. Melicharova et al has demonstrated that presence of two or more comorbid conditions and older age than 70 years resulting in significantly increased urinary neopterin levels in breast carcinoma patients [19].…”

“…Neopterin is a biomarker of immune activation increased in different disorders associated with immune activation, including cancer [24]. Increased levels of neopterin in the serum and urine have been described in several malignancies such as lung [25], endometrial [26], thyroid [8] and breast cancers [27]. It was shown that neopterin levels in patients with malignant breast disease were significantly higher than in the benign group [28].…”
