Effect of composite amendments on physicochemical properties of copper tailings repaired by herbaceous plants

Abstract: Phytoremediation is considered to be the most environmentally friendly green restoration technology for dealing with mine waste. Adding amendments can improve the substrate environment for plant growth and enhance remediation e ciency. Herbaceous plants have become the preferred species for vegetation restoration in abandoned mines because of their fast greening and simple management. Considering that, in this paper, to explore the effect of composite amendments on physicochemical properties of copper tailings… Show more

“…However, there are few feasible examples of direct phytoremediation as the physical and chemical characteristics of tailings differ greatly from those of normal mature soil, and are insufficient for most plants to survive. [ 6 ] Since nearly all of the nutrients in raw ore are lost during the deep grinding of flotation activity, it is essential to add nutrients to the tailings for phytoremediation. Additionally, excessive levels of potentially toxic elements and organic contaminants found in tailings may inhibit plant root development, result in leaf chlorosis, and reduce biomass output.…”

“…Sudan grass, ryegrass and Bermuda grass were the plant raw materials, and the seeds were purchased from Jiangsu Qianhua Baimei Seed Industry Co., Ltd. There have been a lot of studies and elaboration on the preparation and application of conditioner for copper tailings fertilizer restoration by the previous staff of the research group (Wang et al 2023). The conditioner preparation and determination process for fertilizer restoration and subsequent application methods are not described here.…”

“…Previous studies have reported its use as a restorative plant for copper tailings 31 . In order to explore the effects of biodegradable chelating agents on plant extraction of Cu and Cd in copper tailings, this study takes the copper tailings from the 4# tailings pond of Dexing Copper Mine in Jiangxi Province as the research object, and through pot experiments, investigates the effects of different concentrations of chelating agents PASP, CA, or FA on the remediation efficiency of ryegrass plants, revealing their potential mechanisms on plant remediation efficiency, and then selecting the most ideal chelating agent and application ratio.…”
