Effect of Corrosion Pit on the Structural Characteristics of Foil Journal Bearings

Abstract: Due to corrosive environment, material loss in a localized area leads to formation of a corrosion pit. It diminishes the structural integrity and performance of product. To predict and analyze the effect of corrosion pit on the performance of gas foil bearings (GFBs), FEM analysis of bump-type GFBs is carried out. The effect of corrosion pit is investigated for three different shapes: circular, square and triangular. In this study, the FEM analysis of bump-type GFBs is performed in ANSYS software. Firstly, the… Show more

“…These results depict that the higher friction coefficient (0.2 and more) is beneficial for improving the performance characteristics of optimal foil bearings. Moreover, many researchers evaluated the variation of structural stiffness of foil bearings without its optimal design [33]. The structural stiffness of optimized foil bearings are compared with the structural stiffness of foil bearings for its general configuration (i.e.…”

“…Various errors can arise in the foil structure during manufacturing, including thickness, bump pitch, and bump height discrepancies [18]. Vishal Mourya * and Skylab P. Bhore Additionally, predefined errors such as corrosion pits can also affect the structural characteristics of bump-type FJB [19]. The performance characteristics of bump-type FJB largely hinge on its geometric variables, and optimizing these variables becomes crucial for improving performance [20].…”
