EFFECT OF CORTICOSTERONE ON SERUM CONCENTRATIONS OF α2u-GLOBULIN AND ON SPERMATOGENESIS IN OESTROGEN-TREATED RATS

Abstract: Treatment of adult male rats with oestradiol-17 beta (50 microgram/100 g body wt per day for 7 days) resulted 14 days later in reduced levels of alpha 2 micro-globulin in serum and inhibition of spermatogenesis. Administration of corticosterone (2 mg/day) for 14 days to oestrogen-treated rats raised the concentration of alpha 2 micro-globulin in the serum and prevented spermatogenic degeneration. It is concluded that endogenous alpha 2 micro-globulin induced by corticosterone may play a role in spermatogenesis… Show more

“…Hypophysectomy (Roy -1973) reduces azu-globulin excretion in the male rat and adrenalectomy also has the same effect but replacement therapy with glucocorticoid induces azu-globulin in adrenalectomized rats (Irwin et al -1971). An increased concentration of serum az u-globulin after corticosterone treatment in estrogentreated rats is consistent with previous findings (Biswas et al -1982). Since our recent data show that administration of a2 u-globulin in the male rats stimulates gonadotrophin and testosterone synthesis (Biswas et al -1983), the significant rise of serum levels of FSH, LH and testosterone after corticosterone treatment in estrogen-treated rats indicates that corticosterone, by inducing az u-globulin, stimulates the synthesis of gonadotrophms and concomitant increase in serum testosterone is possibly the effect of increased serum concentration of LH.…”

“…Administration of corticosterone in the estrogenized rats reduces this percentage of degeneration from 5 1.26% to 35.67%. The mechanism by which corticosterone stimulates spermatogenesis is not definitely known, although azu-globulin (Roy et al -1976) or corticosterone (Biswas et al -1982) alone can prevent spermatogenic degeneration in estrogen-treated rats.…”

“…A hypogonadal state can also be induced in male rats by the administration of oestrogen which also causes a reduction in the concentration of serum a2u-globulin (Biswas, Ghosh & Neuhaus, 1982). This effect of oestrogen can be prevented by the concomitant administration of corticosterone which prevents the decrease in a2u-globulin synthesis (Ghosh & Biswas, 1984).…”

“…Alpha-2 μ globulin was expressed in a male rat liver, and the expression was changed under oxidative stress, which affected the developmental and multi-hormonal regulation [21][22][23][24] . Trichloroethylene appeared to be the most efficient in decreasing the expression of alpha-2 μ globulin in rat liver, suggesting that trichloroethylene may affect the developmental process in animals ( Figure 1C).…”
