Effect of couple‐based cognitive behavioural intervention on prevention of postnatal depression: multisite randomised controlled trial

Abstract: Objective To compare a couple-based cognitive behavioural intervention (CBI) for postnatal depression with CBI delivered to women alone and control (standard perinatal care).Design Multisite randomised controlled trial.Setting Antenatal clinics at three regional public hospitals in Hong Kong.Sample 388 low-risk childbearing couples.Methods Childbearing couples were randomly allocated to couple-based CBI (n = 134), women-alone CBI (n = 124) or control (n = 130). “…Furthermore, CBT was adapted based on mode and method of delivery. For instance, six studies evaluated group-based CBT [ 54 , 63 , 69 , 72 , 73 , 76 ] while in nine, CBT was delivered individually [ 10 , 51 , 58 , 60 , 62 , 66 , 70 , 74 , 75 ]. The different methods of delivery included web- or app-based platforms by four recent studies [ 58 , 60 , 62 , 66 ], telephonic delivery [ 70 ], audio-visual methods [ 64 , 65 , 69 ] and through home visits [ 10 , 76 ].…”

“…In comparison to the couples who received usual care, those who received the GDM education intervention experienced ~2 kg less GWG [ 43 ]. Other couples have also been included in prenatal programs aimed at smoking cessation [ 44 ], reducing adverse birth outcomes (e.g., cesarean section) [ 45 ], and postpartum depression [ 46 ]. Although these individual programs may not have tailored their approach to target individual compared to couple-based effects, this body of work underscores the unique opportunity to include the non-pregnant partners during pregnancy.…”

“…A descriptive qualitative study was conducted to explore the perceived benefits of the couple‐based psychoeducation program among first‐time Hong Kong Chinese parents and the factors that affect its effectiveness. This study was part of a larger quantitative study related to the couple‐based psychoeducation program for postnatal depression and parenting skills 7 . The intervention comprised a 3‐hour antenatal session and two 30‐minute telephone follow‐up sessions 2 and 4 weeks after birth, all of which were provided by the same midwife.…”

“…After a review of the literature, there has been a paucity of interventional studies of the effects in either gender 6 or studies comparing couple‐based and mother‐alone interventions on parental mental health in local Hong Kong Chinese parents. To fill this knowledge gap, a randomized controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a couple‐based psychoeducation program for first‐time fathers and mothers who were vulnerable to postnatal depression 7 . This program consisted of a 3‐hour antenatal group session and two 30‐minute follow‐up sessions on the telephone within the first month after delivery, all of which were provided by trained midwives.…”
