Effect of current injection into thin-film Josephson junctions

Abstract: New thin-film Josephson junctions have recently been tested in which the current injected into one of the junction banks governs Josephson phenomena. One thus can continuously manage the phase distribution at the junction by changing the injected current. A method of calculating the distribution of injected currents is proposed for a half-infinite thin-film strip with source-sink points at arbitrary positions at the film edges. The strip width W is assumed small relative to ⇤ = 2 2 /d, is the bulk London penet… Show more

“…Anomalous magnetic interference in I c of Josephson junctions has been extensively investigated by considering the effects of inhomogeneous current density in the junction [4,6], trapped vortices [7,8,9,10], local current injection [11,12,13], ferromagnetic π junctions [14,15,16], and semiconductor junctions [17]. Magnetic interference in I c are also analyzed to investigate the edge states in topological insulators [18,19,20] and in graphene [21].…”

“…This procedure has been already used in the investigation of Josephson junction problems for the straight strip geometry. [4][5][6]13 In such cases, explicit formulations of the vortex states have been derived by taking advantage that Eq. ( 4) remains invariant under conformal transformations when B ≈ 0.…”

“…It will be important to distinguish between this effect and other vortex-free distortions reported in recent literature, as those related to: (i) material non-uniformities and temperature gradients in long junctions, [9][10][11] (ii) the breakdown of Josephson's sinusoidal relation, 12 or (iii) the asymmetric injection of current. 13 The work is organized as follows. In Sec.II we cast the equations of a minimal physical model that incorporates the role of the gauge invariant phase in the response of the annuli to an applied magnetic field, either with or without vortices present.…”
