Effect of deuteration on the ferroelectric transition temperature and the distribution coefficient of deuterium in K(H1−xDx)2PO4

Abstract: The variation in the ferroelectric transition temperature with deuteration is described by a linear function only if the deuteration level in the crystal is considered. A least-squares fit of these data resulted in the relation Tc=121.7K + 1.07m, with m in mole% D. The effective distribution coefficient (keff) of deuterium in the system KH2PO4–KD2PO4–D2O was found to vary from 0.75 to 0.99 over the range of 25–99.8 mole% D.

“…A thorough investigation [214,215] of the deuteration dependence of the phase transition temperature for a large number of samples of K(H 1−x D x ) 2 PO 4 has confirmed the non-linear character of T c (x). Comparing the data of [214,215] with other measurements of T c (x) we can note that the values of T c (x) [214,215] agree with the data of [216,225] at 0 x 0.4 and of [226] at 0 x 0.3. Some values of T c given in [199] at x = 0.35; 0.68 and in [225] at x=0.4 coincide with the values of [214,215].…”

“…Two sets of model parameters (set 2 and 3 in table 1) for KD 2 PO 4 crystal were obtained in the work [18]. However, the value 228K [24] was taken as an experimental value of the phase transition temperature which, as work [21] shows, turns out to be erroneous. …”
