Effect of Dexmedetomidine on Cardiac Surgery Patients

Abstract: Dexmedetomidine, an alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonist that is widely used as a sedative medication, is becoming more and more attractive in clinical application on cardiac surgery patients. In this review, we aim to summarize and discuss both retrospective studies and clinical trials regarding the effect of dexmedetomidine on patients who underwent cardiac surgery (including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, aortic surgery, percutaneous coronary intervention, and so on), which illustrates that the c… Show more

“…While for years dexmedetomidine has been contraindicated in veterinary patients with cardiac problems, nowadays in human medicine it is widely used for perioperative sedation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery (55)(56)(57). In dogs dexmedetomidine can increase valvular regurgitation and for this reason it has been indicated to be used with caution in patients with valvular regurgitation (58).…”

“…Dexmedetomidine (Dex) is often used to treat critical care, sedation, pain, anxiety, and insomnia due to its ability as an alpha2-adrenergic receptor agonist ( Baumgartner, et al, 2022 ; Moore, et al, 2022 ; Xiao, et al, 2023 ). Numerous organs, including the brain, heart, lungs, kidney, liver, and small intestine, are protected by Dex ( Xia, et al, 2017 ; Jiang, et al, 2019 ; Liu, et al, 2019 ).…”
