Effect of diaspirin cross‐linked haemoglobin (DCLHb™) on mean arterial pressure during cardiopulmonary bypass in swine

Abstract: Diaspirin cross-linked haemoglobin (DCLHb) is a haemoglobin-based oxygen carrier which had been proposed as a resuscitative solution to replace red cell transfusion in many clinical situations. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of different volumes of DCLHb 10% (1, 5 and 10 mL kg-1) on the cardiovascular system during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and to determine the effect of DCLHb (18 mL kg-1) when added directly to the CPB prime in anaesthetized swine. DCLHb, when used as a priming solu… Show more

“…9 In animal studies, the administration of increasing doses of cross-linked Hb during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery induced an increase in mean arterial pressure. 10 Furthermore, it has also been reported that free Hb induces vasoconstriction because of NO scavenging, limiting the NO availability for vascular smooth muscle cells, which elevates the blood pressure. 11,12 The presumed association between Hb level and blood pressure has been mainly investigated in patients but never in a healthy set of persons.…”

“…Hemoglobin level is also associated with arterial stiffness 9 . In animal studies, it is also demonstrated that mean arterial pressure increases with increasing the infusion rate of cross-linked hemoglobin during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery 10 . Besides, it is suggested that the injection of erythropoietin for the treatment of anemia in patients with end-stage renal disease is associated with elevated blood pressure 11 .…”
