Effect of Dietary Hemp Cake Inclusion on the In Vivo and Post Mortem Performances of Holstein Veal Calves

Abstract: Fifty-two male Holstein veal calves were divided into two homogeneous groups receiving two isoenergetic and isonitrogenous concentrates without (CTR group) or with 3% of hemp cake (HC group). The trial lasted for 171 days. All the calves were weighed five times during the trial. At slaughtering, carcasses were weighed and measured. Meat quality was determined on the Longissimus dorsi muscle. Average daily gain in the first period of the experiment (0–80 d) and dressing percentage and rump width of the carcasse… Show more

“…As reported by Arango et al (2022), HSC contains 28.2 % crude protein and 8.7 % crude lipids, in which the predominant FA was linoleic acid (C18:2 c9, c12 n-6, LA; 56.2 %), followed by oleic acid (C18:1 c9 n-9, OA; 15.8 %) and α-linolenic acid (C18:3 c9,c12,c15 n-3, ALA; 12.8 %); with its beneficial n-6/n-3 FAs ratio (4.4), it has the potential to ensure that dairy products contain beneficial FAs. Some studies show increased ALA and LA in sheep milk when feeding animals with 480 g/day of HSC (Mierliţă, 2018) and with 175 g/d of hemp seeds (Mierliţă, 2016).…”

“…Essential FAs are known to play an important role in human health and meat is a precious source of these nutrients (Arango et al. 2022 ), thus leading meat researchers to enhance the PUFA in fat deposits and muscle tissue in turn of a decrease of the SFA amount. In particular, the WHO guidelines recommended to decrease total FA intake, replace SFA with PUFA, especially the LC FA of the n-3 series, and to reduce the n-6/n-3 ratio to 5 as the maximum threshold value (WHO 2003 ; EFSA NDA Panel (EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products and Nutrition and Allergies)), 2009 ).…”

“…Regarding the more time spent eating solids in the late morning by the CTR group and knowing that the solid feed was given right after the liquid feed, it may be that the HSC inclusion in the milk somehow increased the appetite of the calves; thus, they ate the solid feed faster than the CTR group. Considering this hypothesis, HSC may also increase feed intake when offered ad libitum , but the only study to date that used 3% of HSC in the concentrate of Holstein veal calves did not find any increase in feed intake ( 18 ). HSC inclusion in females' diets made them more active, whereas males did not follow the same pattern, maybe due to a hormone interaction.…”
