Effect of dietary α‐ketoglutarate and allicin supplementation on the composition and diversity of the cecal microbial community in growing pigs

Abstract: Dietary 1.0% AKG combined with 0.5% allicin improved cecal microbial composition and diversity, which might further promote VFA metabolism in growing pigs. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…Most of these genera have been demonstrated by previous studies to be negatively correlated with obesity. [34][35][36] Consistently, Allicin treatment dramatically increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Oscillospira, Peptococcaceae, Anaerostipes, Anaerovorax, Pseudomonadaceae, and Leuconostocaceae, whereas decreased Methylotenera, Rhodococcus, Phyllobacteriaceae, ProteoAlphaproteoRhizobiales, Methylobacterium, Acinetobacter, Microbacterium, and Agrobacterium in the HFD mice ( Figure 1I). The relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the most significantly changed bacterial genera in Allicin-treated mice compared with the HFD group ( Figure 1J,K).…”

“…Recent studies have reported that AKG intervention has beneficial effects in modulating inflammatory cytokines such as IL-2, IL-8, IL-10, TGF- β , TNF- α , and IL-17 [29, 30], but excessive production of cytokines has been shown to have a negative effect on intestinal integrity and epithelial restitution [31, 32]. In a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced piglet model, intervention with AKG was shown to inhibit the secretion and mRNA expression of IL-1 β , IL-6, and IL-12 in the small intestine and prevented tissue damage.…”

“…The 16S rDNA gene sequencing with Illumina MiSeq Sequencing was performed as previously described [25]. Briefly, the total bacterial DNA of colonic content was extracted according to the protocol of Qiagen QIAamp DNA Stool Mini Kit (Qiagen, Germany).…”
