A 50-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of single and mixed strains of probiotic bacteria supplements on juvenile red sea bream (Pagrus major). The study investigated the growth, digestibility, hemato-biochemistry, antioxidant, immune, immune, and growth gene expression and stress responses of P. major. Three hundred juvenile P. major ( 21.56 ± 0.09 g) were randomly distributed into fifteen 200-L polyethylene tanks (20 fish per tank) in triplicate of 5 treatments designated as D1 = the basal diet; Streptococcus faecalis (SF) T − 110 5 × 106 cfu/g diet and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) TOA 5001 5 × 105 cfu/g diet in the second group (D2) at 0.2%; mix SF T − 110 1 × 106 cfu/g diet, Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) TO − A 4 × 105 cfu/g diet, Bacillus mesentericus (BM) TO − A 1 × 102 cfu/g diet, BA TOA 5001 5 × 105 cfu/g diet in the third group (D3) at 1%; mix SF T − 110 1 × 106 cfu/g diet, LP TO − A 4 × 105 cfu/g diet, and BM TO − A 1 × 102 cfu/g diet in fourth group (D4) at 0.5%; and single strain BA TOA5001 5×105 cfu/g diet in the fifth group (D5) at 0.5% of dietary proportion. Results showed that D2 and D3 fish groups exhibit better performance, followed by D4, D5, and control group D1. This finding demonstrated that the use of BA in mix strain probiotic bacteria diet (D2, D3) had improved immune response, antioxidant enzymes, immunity (TNF-a, IL-1b), and growth-related (IGF-1, IGF-2) mRNA expression of juvenile P. major compared to the mix strain D4, single strain D5, and the control D1. Furthermore, single strain D5 and mix strain D4 also exhibit relatively better immune responses in P. major than in control D1. Considering the overall fish performances, mix strain SF+BA (D2) and mix strain SF+BM+LP+BA (D3) were the recommended potential mix strain probiotic bacteria supplement for P. major and may be useful also for other related aquatic species.

The present study was conducted to examine the potential effects of two dietary supplements, the probiotic, Lactobacillus fermentum (LB) (1 × 108 CFU/ml) and 0.5% cinnamon powder (CP) alone and in combination form [LB (1 × 108 CFU/ml) + CP (0.5%)] on growth, intestinal microbiota, immune and antioxidant system and resistance to Yersinia ruckeri infection in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss under high rearing density. Fish were fed experimental diets [control (T1): (non‐supplemented fish), T2: fish fed 1 × 108 CFU/ml L. fermentum, T3: fish fed 0.5% CP and T4: fish fed 1 × 108 CFU/ml L. fermentum + 0.5% CP] for 60 days. After the feeding period, the growth performance, intestinal microbiota, immunity and antioxidant defence were assayed and fish challenged with Y. ruckeri. The supplements alone or in combination showed higher final weight, weight gain and lower feed conversion ratio compared with control. However, the specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio improved when the supplements were used in combination. The supplementation of fish with L. fermentum alone and in combination with CP increased the activity of protease and amylase (p < 0.05). Although the supplementation of fish with the L. fermentum alone or in combination with CP enhanced immune and antioxidant defence components in serum and mucus, this effect was more pronounced when fish fed L. fermentum + CP. The L. fermentum alone or in combination with CP reduced the fish stress, as the concentrations of glucose and cortisol decreased in these treatments. Alkaline phosphatase activity in blood in fish fed CP and those fed L. fermentum + CP and lactate dehydrogenase activity in fish fed L. fermentum + CP decreased compared with control. Furthermore, fish supplemented with L. fermentum + CP significantly increased resistance to Y. ruckeri infection (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the findings of the present study indicated that a combination of CP and L. fermentum in the diet can be more effective in improving growth, immunity, digestive enzyme performance and resistance to Y. ruckeri infection in rainbow trout, suggesting a synergistic effect for them.

The inclusion of exogenous digestive enzymes and probiotics is well established in the aquafeed industry. The mixture of multienzymes and probiotics improves the feed utilization and wellbeing of aquatic animals than the individual supplementation. Herein, we evaluated the exogenous multi-enzyme mixture (beta-glucanase, cellulase, alfa-amylase, protease, xylanase, and phytase) at 250 mg/kg and multi-species probiotic (Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. delbrueckii, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, and Pediococcus acidilactici; 1 × 1010 CFU/g for each bacterial strain) at 2 g/kg on the performances of Siberian sturgeon. The final weight, weight gain, SGR, and PER were markedly enhanced while the FCR was reduced in fish fed multienzyme and probiotics premix (P<0.05). Multi enzymes and probiotic mixture significantly increased the total body protein content (P˃0.05). Multi enzymes and probiotic mixture also improved the digestibility of crude protein, dry matter, and crude lipids nutrients (P<0.05). The count of Goblet cells, microvilli diameter, microvilli length, outer muscle wall diameter, and enterocyte total absorptive surface were markedly increased (P<0.05) by dietary multienzymes and probiotics mixture. The WBCs and neutrophils showed marked improvements (P<0.05). The levels of glucose, triglycerides, blood urea nitrogen, and total bilirubin were markedly higher in fish fed the control than fish fed the multienzymes and probiotics mixture (P<0.05). Significantly, Siberian sturgeon-fed dietary multienzymes and probiotics had improved lysozyme activity, total immunoglobulin, and total protein in the skin mucus and serum samples (P<0.05). Further, the serum complement C3 and C4 was higher in fish-delivered multienzymes and probiotic mixture than in control (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary probiotics synergistically enhanced the activity of multienzymes and resulted in increased feed utilization, nutrient digestibility, and health status of Siberian sturgeon.
