Most meat-producing, commercial rabbit farms depend on artificial insemination (AI) instead of traditional reproductive techniques (Rosato & Iaffaldano, 2011). Artificial insemination improves genetic selection and fertility, even during times of stress (Bergonzoni et al., 1994). In most rabbit farms, fresh diluted semen (Campaniello et al., 2010;Fadl et al., 2020) or chilled semen are used, due to it is low cost and high survival rate compared to cryopreservation (Di Iorio et al., 2014). Spermatozoa are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids with low antioxidant levels within the cytoplasm (Ismail et al., 2020;Zeweil & El-Gindy, 2017). The processes involved in diluting and chilling or incubating semen create several challenges due to semen's sensitivity to hypertonic solutions (Castellini, 1996) and its susceptibility to oxidative damage, which causes sperm motility and sperm capacitation deficiencies as a result of sperm metabolism's overproduction of ROS (De Lamirande et al., 1997). Reactive oxygen species levels rise with rising seminal plasma lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme levels after chilling (Murdoch & White, 1968). Cold shock also causes damage to acrosomes and plasma membranes, as well as increased DNA fragmentation (Tavilani et al., 2008), which lowers sperm motility and fertility (Mocé & Vicente, 2009).Given these difficulties, it is important to reduce the production of ROS, and thereby maintain normal sperm capacitation, acrosome reactions and mitochondrial membranes (Agarwal et al., 2008;Desai et al., 2010), while also enhancing the chilled, diluted sperm's quality and storage ability (Di Iorio et al., 2014;Storey, 1997). Background The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of different levels of betaine (Bet) inclusion in the diet on the intestinal health of growing rabbits under summer heat. A total of 100 weaned Qixing meat rabbits aged 35 d with body weight of 748.61 ± 38.59 g were randomly divided into 5 treatment groups: control group (basal diet) and Bet groups (basal diet + 0.75, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 g/kg Bet). The average daily temperature in the rabbitry during the experiment was 30.48 °C and the relative humidity was 69.44%. Results Dietary addition of Bet had no significant effect on growth performance and health status of growing rabbits (P > 0.05), but it increased ileal secretory immunoglobulin A content compared to the control under summer heat (P < 0.05). Addition of 0.75 g/kg Bet up-regulated jejunal IL-4, down-regulated ileal TNF-α expression (P < 0.05). The addition of 1.0 g/kg Bet increased the villi height (VH) in the jejunum (P < 0.05). Serum glucose levels were reduced, and the expression of SLC6A20 was up-regulated in jejunum and ileum of rabbits fed with 1.5 g/kg Bet (P < 0.05). When added at 2.0 g/kg, Bet reduced serum HSP70 content, increased jejunal VH, and up-regulated duodenal SLC7A6, SLC38A2, mTOR and 4EBP-2 expression (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed that intestinal mTOR expression was significantly and positively correlated with SLC7A6, SLC38A2, SLC36A1 and IL-4 expression (P < 0.05). Conclusions Dietary addition of Bet can up-regulate the expression of anti-inflammatory factors through the AAT/mTOR pathway, improve the intestinal immune function, alleviate intestinal damage in growing rabbits caused by summer heat, and improve intestinal health.

The present study examined the efficiency of thyme in improving the productive and reproductive performances in male rabbits living in hot climates with the further lowering of the faecal ammonia and adverse heat stress. One hundred and twenty-five Zealand-White male rabbits were assigned to five dietary treatments [age: 60-day-old; body weight (b.w.): 1 362 ± 20 g] (n = 25). The basal diet was supplemented with either 0 (control), 4, 8, 12 or 16 g/kg of thyme leaves. The experiment lasted for 90 days. The feed and water were provided ad libitum. The animals were housed in an open system (39 °C ambient-temperature and 30–35% relative-humidity). The dietary thyme leaf levels significantly improved the appetite, body weight gain and growth performance compared to the control (P < 0.001). The weight gain and feed conversion ratio were directly proportional to the thyme leaves intake. The faecal ammonia was markedly lowered in response to the feeding with thyme leaves. The thyme leaves significantly improved the liver and kidney functions as indicated by their biomarkers. The testosterone concentrations and semen characteristics were also significantly improved in the thyme leaves-treated groups compared to the control (P < 0.01). In conclusion, thyme leaves, at an optimum dose of 16 g/kg of the diet, could be an efficient feed additive for rabbits surviving under hot climatic conditions.
