Annual Sexual Behavior in Boer Bucks Located in the Guerrero Tropics in Mexico

The aim of this study was to evaluate the intensity of the annual sexual behavior (SB) of Boer bucks under tropical conditions in southern Mexico. For one year, 16 extensively grazing males were evaluated for SB individually with estrogenized goats. From the beginning of the experiment and every 30 days, body weight (BW), body condition (BC), testicular circumference (TC), odor intensity (OI), and SB (nudging, ano-genital sniffing, flehmen, mounting attempts, mounts with intromission, and self-urination) were recorded. The bucks showed more intense SB during the months of November to May than during the months of June to October (p < 0.05). Greater frequencies were found for nudging, ano-genital sniffing, mounting attempts, and self-urination in the months of November to May (p < 0.001). BW was lower during the months of January to August than in the months of September to December (p < 0.05). On the other hand, TC increased from October to December (p < 0.05). Similarly, the OI in males varied over time (time effect; p < 0.001). In fact, an increased odor was found from October to December. The conclusions are that breed male goats from the tropics of Guerrero have a more intense SB during the months of November to May, but TC, OI, BW, and BC correspond to the time of the year when forage availability is the greatest.

Effect of Dorper Rams’ Social-Sexual Hierarchy on Their Sexual Behavior and Capacity to Induce Estrus in Ewes

This study aimed to assess the influence of the social rank of rams and quality of stimuli to ewes between dominant and subordinate Dorper rams joined to anestrus ewes. Social rank was evaluated for two days (ESR; n = 36); rams were exposed to estrogenized ewes in a competitive test. According to the reproductive response, anovulatory ewes (n = 76) were divided into two groups: LHRe (n = 38; ewes exposed to four low hierarchy rams (LHR)) and HHRe (n = 38; ewes exposed to four high hierarchy rams (HHR)). Regarding aggressive behaviors, HHR showed a higher (p < 0.05) proportion of rams showing threatening, knocking, and blocking behaviors than LHR. Appetitive behavior was higher (p < 0.05) in HHR than LHR rams (3576 ± 0.7 vs. 3054 ± 0.7 number of events). Consummatory sexual behavior was higher (p < 0.05) in HHR than LHR (499 ± 0.3 vs. 205 ± 0.1 number of events). Indicators of sexual inactivity (SRI) were similar between HHR and LHR (499 ± 0.3 vs. 433 ± 0.1; p > 0.05). The estrus response (>80%; p > 0.05) and ovarian response (70%, p > 0.05) were similar for both groups of ewes. It was concluded that LHR are equally effective as HHR in inducing sexual activity in ewes showing postpartum anestrus.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the administration of testosterone to a well-fed or underfed sexually inactive goat bucks on their sexual behavior and semen characteristics. Twenty sexually experienced mixed-breed goat bucks (1.5 years of age) were randomly assigned to one of four treatments for a period of 71 days. Treatments consisted of diets with amount of nutrients to meet 1.0 times the nutrient maintenance requirements with the application of 25 mg testosterone every third day during 21 d (treatment 1T) or saline (treatment 1C). A third and fourth treatments received a diet 1/2 times the nutrient maintenance requirements with testosterone (1/2T) or saline (1/2C). Bucks on 1T and 1C had higher body weight, body condition score and scrotal circumference compared to 1/2T and 1/2C (P<0.05). Also, bucks on 1T and 1/2T had higher sexual odor compared to 1C and 1/2C (P<0.05). Mean serum testosterone concentrations were highest in 1T (4.78 ± 6.78 ng/ml) and lowest in 1/2C (0.56 ± 0.96 ng/ml; P<0.01). Semen volume, sperm concentration, and mass motility were not affected by treatments, but sperm progressive motility was lower (P<0.05) in 1/2C (46%) than the other treatments (52 to 57%). Courtship traits and mounts were more frequent (P<0.05) in 1T compared with the other treatments. Likewise, bucks in the 1T group had the shortest latency to first mount (82 seconds) compared to other treatments (110 to 164 seconds). These results indicate that testosterone administration to well-fed sexually inactive bucks provokes clearly defined sexual activity during the non-breeding season. However, these benefits are overridden by underfeeding goat bucks.
