BackgroundMyofascial pain is one of the most common facial region pains, presenting itself with various signs and symptoms like tenderness of masticatory muscles and difficulty in mouth opening. Considering its multifactorial aetiology various treatment modalities are present.ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)and low‐level laser therapy (LLLT) for the patients of temporomandibular disorders (TMDS).MethodsThe study was conducted with 20 patients diagnosed with TMDS. Group A received LLLT at 660 nm, 6 J/point, two sessions/week for 4 weeks and group B received TENS at 2–250 Hz, two sessions/week for 4 weeks.ResultsPain Score decreased and mouth opening increased in both groups with time, however, the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. Right and left lateral excursions showed improvement at different intervals in both groups. However, the LLLT group showed significant improvement.ConclusionClinical trial showed improvement in visual analogue scale (VAS), maximum mouth opening (MMO) and lateral excursion in the different time intervals in both the groups with LLLT showed more improvement with lateral excursions movements.

Objectives To compare the occlusal contact regions (OCRs) obtained through an intraoral scanning system and conventional impression procedures via an innovative evaluation method. Materials and methods Fifteen participants with complete dentitions and stable centric occlusion were included. Three groups were created based on the technique used to obtain the OCRs of quadrant posterior teeth at the maximal intercuspal position: 100 μm articulating paper (Control), an intraoral scanner (Test 1, T1) and conventional impression procedure (Test 2, T2). OCRs of control group were digitized by the intraoral scanner, while all conventional impressions were cast and digitized by an extraoral scanner. The virtual occlusal records of the 2 test groups were obtained by buccal bite registration. The OCRs within 100 μm in the 3 groups were three-dimensionally superimposed based on the tooth surfaces and the area of OCRs (S C , S T1 , S T2 ) was calculated. The area of overlapping OCRs (S O ) between the test groups and the control group was calculated. In the two test groups, the consistency rate of OCRs (S O /S C ) and the positive rate of OCRs (S O /S T ) were calculated and compared. For occlusal tightness evaluation, the mean occlusal clearances (OC) as well as minimum OC between the upper and lower models were calculated and compared. Results The consistency rate of OCRs was 0.73 ± 0.17 for T1 group and 0.23 ± 0.13 for T2 group ( p < 0.001). The positive rate of OCRs was 0.67 ± 0.15 for T1 group and 0.56 ± 0.23 for T2 group ( p = 0.143). The mean OC was 51.32 ± 16.04 μm for T1 group and 68.20 ± 18.15 μm for T2 group ( p = 0.024). The minimum OC was − 61.74 ± 35.38 μm for T1 group and 4.09 ± 27.15 μm for T2 group ( p < 0.001). Conclusions For obtaining occlusal records in the quadrant posterior region, the tested intraoral scanning system was more reliable for recording occlusal contact regions and showed higher occlusal tightness compared with conventional impression procedures. Clinical relevance (1) The evaluation method can assist clinicians in making more objective analysis and comparisons among different sources of virtual occlusal records. (2) Occlusal tightness is a key and indispensable indicator in the evaluation of virtual occlusal records, and it can be quantified by measuring the occlusal clearance utilizing the current evaluation method.

BackgroundHaemophilia A, B and von Willebrand disease are the most common bleeding disorders. There is an increased tendency of spontaneous bleeding into joints resulting in intra‐articular infection. It is believed that Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can be affected in a similar manner which can further lead to limited mouth opening and ankylosis. The association between bleeding disorders (BD) and development of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is poorly understood. This systematic review intends to evaluate the association of TMD in individuals with inherited bleeding disorders as compared to healthy controls.MethodsPubMed, Ovid SP and Google Scholar were searched for articles published between the times of inception to 1 May 2023. All the articles were subjected to Population, Exposure, Comparison and Outcome model (PECO) based on which inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Participants (P) is children, adults or adolescents; Exposure (E) is children, adults or adolescents with a diagnosis of Haemophilia or bleeding disorder (BD); Comparator (C) is age and gender‐matched healthy controls who do not have Haemophilia or bleeding disorder; Outcome (O) is prevalence of any signs or symptoms (clinical, radiographic) that is suggestive of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Studies showing the prevalence of TMD are included for qualitative analysis. Only the studies which provided data of the prevalence of TMD in both the groups (BD and healthy controls) were included in the quantitative analysis. TMD diagnosis can be by clinical signs and symptoms, radiographic criteria, Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD), The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) or any other imaging criteria (MRI). We have set the exclusion criteria as articles without a control group, diagnostic sensitivity studies, case reports and systematic reviews and narrative reviews. The software Review Manager version 5.4 (Cochrane Collaboration) was used to perform the pooled analysis. We measured the risk ratio (RR) between the two groups (BD and healthy controls) for the outcome TMD.ResultsA total of seven studies are included for qualitative analysis of data. The age of the population (BD and control) in the included studies ranged between 2 and 57 years. The prevalence of TMD in individual studies varied from 2% to 77%, and controls in the individual studies varied from 2% to 14%. Among the included studies, only clinical signs, symptoms and history were taken into consideration in four studies. Four studies were included for meta‐analysis, the pooled result of the four studies suggests there is no significant difference in the prevalence of TMD in BD and control group (p value = .11, RR 2.19; 95% CI [0.84, 5.73]).ConclusionThis systematic review and meta‐analysis elicits no association between bleeding disorders and increased prevalence of TMD.
