Effect of Doping and Irradiation on the Decomposition of NaBrO₃: A Kinetic Study

Abstract

The kinetics of isothermal decomposition of pure as well as Ba 2+ (0.25 -2.00 mol%) doped sodium bromate and the influence of •"Co y-irradiation thereon have been investigated at different temperatures between 613-653 K. The data reveal that decomposition in each case is characterized by (i) small initial gas evolution followed by (ii) induction period, (iii) a slow linear reaction (iv) acceleratory and (v) decay stages. The latter two periods are analysed according to Prout-Tompkins and AvramiErofeyev mechanism with two different rate constants, k A and k D in each case. Irradiation as well as doping shorten the induction period, /, enhance the rate of reaction in the acceleratory and decay periods without affecting the initial puff of gas. The combined effect of both these treatments, eliminates the induction period and increases the extent of decomposition remarkably. The activation energy of the acceleratory period decreases and that of the decay stage increases by doping but the values remain unaffected by irradiation.
