“…However, the application of wire EDM (WEDM) in aeroengine manufacture is somewhat limited, in spite of the significant potential for using the process as a replacement for broaching in the production of critical blade mounting slots in engine discs. The main reasons for this have been the perception of slower production times than are currently achieved by broaching which is extensively used for this activity worldwide, and possibly more importantly, the adverse workpiece surface integrity generally associated with EDM [3,4]. These include the formation of a heat affected zone with an upper recast layer, surface cracks and flaws and tensile residual stresses.…”

“…While comparing the fracture strength of both machined and unmachined WC-Co cemented carbide in machining, the increase in discharge energy on machined surface generates rougher surface which consists of debris, crater, and microcracks due to more quantity of molten and floating metal suspended in discharge gap. The crater and microcracks were observed on the machined surface because of greater thermal stress that results in the reduction of the fracture strength of specimen [87]. Increase in discharge energy and discharge duration (pulse duration) increases MRR and gas bubbles in the machining zone.…”

“…More brittle, recrystallized cemented carbides layer, it may induce micro cracks to deepen. Authors [21] proved that the strength of cemented carbide (WC-30%Co) was diminished about 35% compared to core material. Their study revealed that the surface characteristics was modified by micro -cracks, voids and pinholes.…”
