Effect of Ellipticity on Cavitation Mechanism and Thermal Effect of Elliptical Journal Bearings

Abstract: Taking the elliptical bearing as the research object, adopting the mixture two-phase flow model and energy equation, the pressure characteristics, the cavitation distribution and the thermal effect of elliptical bearing with different ellipticities are analyzed. The results show that the maximum temperature rise of elliptical bearing is lower than cylindrical bearing. The optimal ellipticity of elliptical bearing is 0.6, the upper and lower bush of elliptical bearing can form the effective oil film, the propor… Show more

“…This figure illustrates obviously good agreement of the results, with a maximum deviation of 2.7%. The pressure and the temperature obtained in the present work for an EJB with a noncircularity ratio of 0.5, 0.1MPainlet pressure, and 3000 rpm shaft rotational speed lubricated with pure oil, were compared to the results obtained by Wang et al (2021) as can be seen in figures 8-a and 8-b. These figures show a good agreement between the results, with maximum deviations for pressure and temperature of 1.38% and 1.47%, respectively.…”

“…The results revealed an improvement in temperature and pressure distributions due to operating at constant speed and variable loads. Wang et al [12] studied the impact of the noncircularity on the performance of an EJB while considering the cavitation effect using a mixed twophase flow model. According to the data, elliptical bearings experience a lower maximum temperature rise than cylindrical ones.…”

“…However, the restricted bubble collapsing near the elliptical walls, as a type of curved wall with different curvatures, have not been investigated yet. And, the elliptical walls often appear in various fluid machinery operating conditions, such as elliptical hydrofoils [34] , [35] , elliptical nozzles [36] , and elliptical bearings [37] , [38] . These elliptical components have special functions, such as the elliptical bearings are conducive to the stable operation of the journal bearings and the elliptical nozzles affect the characteristics of the spray, and often exist in narrow channels.…”
