Effect of EMS on Induced Morphological Mutants and Chromosomal Variation in Cowpea (<i>Vigna unguiculata</i> (L.) Walp)

Abstract: Effect of EMS (ethyl methane sulphonate) on induced morphological mutants and chromosomal variation in cowpea was studied using five different doses of mutagen along with a control in randomized blocked design with three replications. The morphological mutants there are two types of viable and chlorophyll mutants. Viable mutant contains tall, dwarf, early maturity, late maturity, leaf mutants pod mutant and flower mutants. The frequency of chlorophyll mutant contains albino, xantha and viridis. This concentrat… Show more

“…The disparities, such as plant height and habit, leaf morphology, and pod variation, were considered monogenic recessive. Tall and dwarf mutants were observed, which were also earlier observed by Gnanamurthy and Dhanavel (2014) in cowpea and Shahwar et al. (2019) in lentil.…”

“…Variations in the seed attributes of mutagenized fenugreek were recorded. Several workers have reported variations in crops such as cowpea ( Gnanamurthy and Dhanavel, 2014 ), black gram ( Goyal et al., 2020 ), and linseed ( Jahan et al., 2020 ). These variations in seeds may be attributed to the mutagen-induced disruption of one or few genes linked with these characteristics.…”

“…By causing guanine to get alkylated at either its N7 or O6 position, EMS replaces the base pair of cytosine with a pair of thymine [5]. High gene mutation frequencies and low chromosome aberration frequencies are reported by EMS [6].…”
