Effect of endoscopic marsupialization of paranasal sinus mucoceles involving the orbit: a review of 27 cases

Abstract: Paranasal sinus mucoceles (PSMs) can involve the orbit because the topographic anatomies of the paranasal sinuses and orbit are interrelated. We encountered 27 patients with PSMs involving the orbit that caused orbital symptoms. In this study, we evaluated the frequent symptoms and signs of PSMs involving the orbit, and report postoperative changes of orbital symptoms including the effects on visual acuity. A retrospective chart review, radiologic evaluation, and interviews were conducted after Institutional R… Show more

“…Mucoceles are found frequently in the maxillary sinus and are mostly located in the frontal sinus when sinus drainage is blocked. They occur when secreted mucus collects and leads to bony expansion with a strong pressure effect [57]. CRS that occurs after receiving high-dose radiation or in patients with cystic fibrosis may also require early management due to thick mucinous secretions with recurrent scar formation [5, 6].…”

“… 2 Smaller series have demonstrated variation from 6.7% to 40% for amaurosis, always considering only patients with orbital involvement. 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 When all cases of mucocele were considered, lower occurrence of amaurosis has been reported, approximately 5%. 2 …”

“… 1 Maxillary mucoceles, in addition to being rare, seldom invade the orbit. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 Even in the face of an invasion, usually the only orbital symptoms are eye pain, 3 , 5 proptosis, 3 or diplopia. 3 A report of amaurosis caused by maxillary mucocele occurred in a patient who had been subjected to skeletal surgery (Le Fort III), where this previous procedure, by fracturing the orbital floor and sinus, could have facilitated both the development of the mucocele and its extension toward the orbit.…”
