Effect of environmental conditions on Alopecurus myosuroides germination. I. Effect of temperature and light

Abstract: Summary Control of Alopecurus myosuroides with a minimum amount of herbicide may be improved by models describing the impact of cropping system effects on the weed's demography. In order to develop the submodel relating the weed seedbank to the emerged seedlings, a series of laboratory experiments was set up to analyse and quangify the effects on A. myosuroides germination of temperature, storage location, seed age and light incidence for various seed populations. The minimum temperature requirement for germin… Show more

“…Dishes were then incubated at 20uC under six fluorescent lighting tubes 3 (Osram, L 18 W/77, 20 mmol m 22 s 21 , 24 h). For seeds to be tested in darkness, all manipulations were carried out in a dark room under a green light to avoid stimulation of germination, as shown by Colbach et al (2002). Dishes also were wrapped with two layers of aluminum foil.…”

“…It overwinters in a two‐leaf to five‐tiller stage with vigorous resumption of growth in spring. The germination base temperature is estimated to be at around 0°C (Colbach, Chauvel, Dürr, & Richard, ). Plants have a shallow root system and reach up to 80 cm in height (Naylor, ).…”

“…Some seeds germinate equally well in both light and darkness (Baskin & Baskin 1988), while others germinate more readily in either light (Colbach et al 2002) or dark conditions (Thanos et al 1989). In light-sensitive species, for example, seeds will not germinate if they remain covered by litter or soil.…”
