Effect of Environmental Humidity on Static Foam Stability

Abstract: The quality of foaming products (such as beer and shampoo) and the performance of industrial processes that harness foam (such as the froth flotation of minerals or the foam fractionation of proteins) depend upon foam stability. In this study, experiments are performed to study the effect of environmental humidity on the collapse of static foams. The dependency of the rate at which a foam collapses upon humidity is demonstrated, and we propose a hypothesis for bubble bursting due to Marangoni instability induc… Show more

“…The similar trend of the film thinning for different humidities suggests that the liquid drainage is decoupled from the evaporation, such that the term j d (z, t) is rendered by the measurements at R H = 100 %, where the evaporative flux is zero. If some Marangoni gradients were generated by temperature or surfactant concentration gradients as proposed earlier [5,19], they would modify the boundary condition at the interfaces of the film and therefore affect the drainage differently depending on R H . This effect thus appears to be negligible in our experiment.…”

“…The volume change over time was also recorded. Since foam stability was affected crucially by environmental humidity [25], the cylinder was sealed with parafilm. The morphology of the bubbles was observed with an optical microscope (BXM-99, China).…”
