More practitioners are embracing blockchain technology to improve recycling performance. However, current research on the use of blockchain is mostly confined to general discussions on sustainable supply chains and circular economy, with limited studies specifically focusing on the recycling chain. This paper conducts a thorough content-based review of the literature related to the application of blockchain technology in the recycling chain with the objective to identify a conceptual framework. Although descriptive and thematic analyses show limited developments, blockchain technology can offer four distinct functions in the recycling chain: transparency, integration, behaviour channelisation, and service transformation. The adoption of blockchain in this area has technical, organisational, and environmental limitations that have not been overcome yet. In terms of benefits, blockchain technology improves recycling performance in terms of cost, dependability, flexibility, sustainability, and risk reduction. To summarise the findings, the paper proposes a novel conceptual framework for blockchain implementations in the recycling chain to support practitioners and guide scholars in further blockchain technology exploration.

This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the fund policy on ecodesign and manufacturing/remanufacturing activities and the effectiveness of the manufacturer’s ecodesign responsibility transfer strategy. It considers a manufacturing and remanufacturing system composed of a single manufacturer and a single remanufacturer performing under relevant fund policy. The fund policy is innovatively designed by considering three dimensions: tax, reduction, and subsidy. Based on mathematical models and comparative analysis, the principal results show the following: (1) the impact scope of either the tax or the reduction dimension of the fund policy is larger than that of subsidy. The subsidy for encouraging remanufacturing is effective only when the remanufacturer uses some of the collected returns for remanufacturing. (2) The impact direction of tax, reduction, or subsidy is complicated, changing when the remanufacturer uses some of the collected returns for remanufacturing. (3) The responsibility transfer behavior of the manufacturer does not change the impact scope of the fund policy, but changes its impact strength and impact path. The impact of the responsibility transfer strategy on enterprises’ decision-making varies with different remanufacturing scenarios.

This paper analyzes an optimal dynamic production control problem of a remanufacturing system in stochastic environment. The system consists of one inventory for serviceable items and one virtual inventory for the items used by customers which will be either remanufactured to be serviceable items or discarded. Demands will be lost if there is no serviceable items available. At any decision epoch, the decision maker has to decide whether to produce items or not by raw materials, so as to minimize the long run average cost. The optimization problem is constructed as a Markov decision process (MDP). We show that the optimal policy has a multi-threshold structure (switching curve) and it is monotonic in system parameters. Furthermore, based on the structure of the optimal policy, we construct a performance evaluation model for computing efficiently the optimal thresholds. The expression of the average cost is given by a quasi-birthdeath (QBD) process. Finally, we provide some numerical results to show the effectiveness of our approach and the impact of different parameters on the optimal policy and average cost.
