“…On the other hand, ECP‐treated cows started to ovulate early (42 hr), which agrees with previous reports where ECP produced ovulations before 50 hr after PID removal (Colazo, Kastelic, & Mapletoft, ; Uslenghi et al., ). This determines the risk that those cows could have an aged oocyte at the time of semen arrival (Dalton and Saacke 2007, cited by Ayres et al., ) and fertilization rate can drastically decrease when AI occurs after ovulation (Roelofs et al., ).…”

“…The dominant follicle (DF) of a wave was defined as that one that reached the largest diameter (Ginther, Kastelic, & Knopf, ). The time of ovulation was defined as the average time between the last observation of the dominant follicle and the time at which the dominant follicle disappeared (ovulation), which also determined the ovulatory follicle diameter (Manes, Aller, Callejas, Hozbor, & Alberio, ; Uslenghi et al., ). On day 22 (approximately 12 days after ovulation), another ultrasound evaluation was performed to confirm ovulation by the presence of a CL (Carvalho et al., ); the CL area was measured with the ultrasound equipment's caliper system.…”

“…No differences in pregnancy rate (P>0.05) were found between the EC and EB groups, which agrees with the results of Meneghetti et al (2009) for Nellore cattle (50.8% and 51.9% pregnancy rate, respectively) and Uslenghi et al (2016) for Bos taurus beef cows (54% and 49.2% pregnancy rate, respectively). However, Uslenghi et al (2014) reports the effects of hormonal treatment on pregnancy rate, founding a higher rate after EB (61.5%) compared to EC treatment (48.9%). The results found in the present study indicate that the type of estrogen used does not influence the gestation rate; however, the advantage of EC is to reduce the management of heifers in programs using FTAI.…”

“…Ovulation takes place 26.7±5.4 h after the start of heat in dairy breeds (Walker et al 1996). The interval between stopping progesterone-based treatment and ovulation varies between 69.6±2.4 h to 73.1±1 h in the Zebu Nelore (Sà Filho et al 2010a) and from 65.4±2.2 to 66.0±3.3 h in other dairy breeds (Uslenghi et al 2014). Few data are available in the literature on this interval in N'Dama cattle.…”
