Sci. 88: 457Á461. Peripheral progesterone (P 4 ) concentrations as well as pregnancy rates (PR) between cows treated with Ovsynch or CIDR ovulation synchronization/TAI protocols were compared. Two hundred and twenty-seven postpartum lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned to Ovsynch (n 0111) or CIDR (n 0116) ovulation synchronization/TAI protocols. Pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasonography at day 35 after TAI and later confirmed by rectal palpation at day 60 post TAI. Milk samples were taken from the beginning of treatment (day (10) until day 35 after TAI (day 0) for P 4 determination. Pregnancy rates for Ovsynch and CIDR groups of cows were 31 and 41%, respectively. The PR of ovulation synchronized cows for Ovsynch and CIDR groups were 49 and 69%, respectively. Progesterone levels during the sampling period were similar (P0.05) between Ovsynch and CIDR treated cows.

The factors that affect the interval to ovulation, the type of ovulated dominant follicle (DF), and the cause of anovulation after prostaglandin (PG) treatment were investigated. Nine cows were assigned to six groups (54 cows in total) but the group size was later fixed at eight cows (48 in total). They received 25 mg tromethamine dinoprost as dinoprost on Day 6 (Group D6), Day 7 (Group D7), Day 8 (Group D8), Day 9 (Group D9), Day 10 (Group D10), or Day 11 (Group D11) after natural ovulation (Day 0). If th e D F d id no t o vu late, then the cow was assigned to Group NO. In Group D6, the 1st DF ovulated in all cows 4 days after PG treatment, whereas in Groups D9, D10, and D11, the 2nd DF ovulated in all cows 4 to 7 days after PG treatment. In 10 cows, the DF did not o vulate , and late anovulation was significantly higher in Group D6 cows than in Group D11 cows. The progesterone (P4) levels decreased to less than 1 ng/ml in all groups on the day after PG treatment. The estradiol-17β (E2) levels began to increase after PG treatment and peaked at 2 days before ovulation in the cows that ovulated. In anovulated cows, E2 tended to be higher and there was no clear E2 peak in some cows. These results ind icate d that the number of days to ovulation, the type of ovulated DF, and anovulation were affected by factors that were associated with the DF when it was producing E2.

Au cours des cinquante dernières années, des progrès considérables dans les performances d’élevage des espèces domestiques ont été obtenus grâce à une meilleure connaissance acquise dans le domaine de la physiologie, en particulier en ce qui concerne la nutrition, la croissance, la reproduction et la lactation, et qui s’est conjuguée aux progrès génétiques accomplis dans les différentes espèces animales dans un contexte de meilleure maîtrise sanitaire des troupeaux et de maîtrise plus fine des systèmes d’élevage en place. Le recours aux substances hormonales pour mieux maîtriser les fonctions de reproduction et de croissance a pris une place déterminante dans ce progrès. Néanmoins, une tendance profonde consistant à restreindre leur utilisation à certains moments critiques de la vie de l’animal est apparue en Europe ces quinze dernières années, obligeant à rechercher des alternatives par le biais d’une meilleure maîtrise alimentaire, génétique et des systèmes d’élevage, ceci afin de garantir aux consommateurs une meilleure qualité définie a priori des produits animaux. Les fonctions physiologiques qui offrent des possibilités d’un contrôle hormonal exogène, les substances hormonales utilisables et les spéculations animales concernées sont présentées tour à tour. Un éclaircissement sur les risques toxicologiques que présentent ces substances, le contrôle et la traçabilité de leur utilisation et les réglementations en vigueur sont ensuite rappelés. Enfin, sont évoquées les recherches qui permettront de faire progresser sensiblement la question de l’utilisation des hormones en élevage dans un contexte sociétal renouvelé.
