Effect of Exercise on Ease in Performing Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living From Age 70 to 77: The Jerusalem Longitudinal Study

Abstract: Subjects remained active and independent at age 77. Reported ease of performance declined and revealed changes in function. Exercise at least four times a week at age 70 preserved ease of performance at age 77 independent of the influence of specific disease or general self-assessed health.

“…The relationship of PA at age 70 years and the ease of performing ADLs 7 years later was described within our cohort. 29 Elsewhere, baseline and increasing PA lev-els during 16 years of follow-up among long-distance runners improved functional status into their early 70s. 40 Unlike Berk et al, 40 who examined endurance athletes, our cutoff point included as little as 4 hours per week of PA, which might have attenuated the positive impact of more vigorous activity.…”

“…Physical activity was dichotomized to inactive (answer 1) versus active (answers 2, 3, or 4). This questionnaire was adapted from the Gothenburg 70-year olds Longitudinal Study and predicts functional status and morbidity among our cohort (17,18); frequency of leaving the house (dichotomized to less than 1/week versus more than 1/week); frequency of reading (dichotomized to rarely <1/week versus >1/week); functional status was assessed by self report according to direct questioning for each of the various basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL's) (transfer, dressing, bathing, toilet hygiene, eating, continence) (19). Subjects were graded as either completely independent without any difficulty, independent with difficulty, or dependent on another person.…”

“…There is evidence supporting the benefi cial effects of exercise on functional capacity in older people [4,[21][22][23][24] . The increases in physical activity parameters, obtained by AA intake in the present study, are of similar magnitude to those reported after exercise training [4,21,22] .…”
