Objectives To develop reference equations of maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) in children and adolescents, and to test the validity and reproducibility of MVV. Study Design Cross‐sectional study. Patient‐Subject selection A total of 348 healthy volunteers (6‐17 years)—248 for the development of reference equations and 100 to test the validity— were selected. Methodology Spirometry and MVV were performed. Volunteers were instructed to breathe quickly and strongly to estimate the MVV. Independent variables tested were age, sex, weight, height, and pulmonary function. Results All volunteers (50% boys) had a normal pulmonary function. Mean MVV was 66.3 (17.8) L/minute for children and 118.8 (20.0) L/minute for adolescents. The equation developed for children was MVV = 4.865 + (forced expiratory volume in the first second [FEV1] × 16.257) + (peak expiratory flow [PEF] × 7.621); for adolescents was MVV = −25.450 + (FEV1 × 11.591) + (PEF × 6.672) + (sex × 12.179) + (age × 3.613). No significant differences were observed between measured and predicted MVV in children (64.6 [10.3] vs 64.6 [8.5] L/minute; P = .34) or adolescents (111.8 [23.4] vs 113.1 [22.8] L/minute, P = .12). The intraclass correlation coefficient between measured and predicted MVV was 0.95 (0.91‐0.97) for children and 0.90 (0.82‐0.94) for adolescents. The mean bias of Bland‐Altman analysis was −0.8 L/minute for children and −2.7 L/minute for adolescents. Conclusions Normative values for MVV were established for children and adolescents, additionally, these equations are reproducible and it can be used to determine the respiratory impairments in the pediatric population.

Introduction and Aim: Obesity is becoming a worldwide problem and women were more likely to be obese than men in all regions of world. Obesity affects multiple systems of the body including respiratory system. This study aimed at comparing the respiratory functions before and after cycling in obese and non obese young women. Materials and Methods: One hundred healthy female in the age groups of 18-25 years were considered. Fifty subjects were obese [BMI>25 kg/m2] and 50 were age matched non obese [BMI=18 to 22.9 kg/m2]. Anthropometric measurements weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference were measured. BMI and waist hip ratio were calculated. Spirometric parameters like FVC (Functional Vital Capacity), FEV1 (Forced expiratory volume 1 second), FEV1/FVC ratio were assessed before cycling. Cycling (a graded submaximal exercise) was performed using YMCA cycling protocol. Spirometric parameters were assessed within 5 minutes from termination of cycling. Data collected were statistically analyzed using paired ‘t’ test. Results: Before cycling and after cycling values of FVC, FEV1/FVC in obese young women were lower (p<0.0001) compared to non obese young women but their values were within normal range of % prediction. On comparing the FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC values from before to after cycling there was statistically significant reduction in both the groups. On comparison of reduction in spirometric values from before to after cycling, among obese and non obese young women, it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Both in before and after cycling the obese young women had reduced pulmonary function test compared to non obese young women but values within the normal percentage of prediction.

Introduction: Number of obese people is growing on a daily basis in Brazil, including morbid obese ones, but there is still a lack of studies with this subject. Due to this, the main goal of this study was to identify body profi le, physiological variables behavior and oxygen consumption in grade III obese women, submitted to an ergospirometric test in arm ergometer. Method: Take part in this study, thirteen (13) female grade III obese patients between 20 and 40 years. They were submitted to an electric bioimpedance test for body composition measurement and an Ergospirometric test in arm ergometer for oxygen consumption, heart rate, and oxygen saturation, systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, resting and after exercises, analysis. Results: The patients revealed a BMI of 46.5±3.81 kg/m², 51.9±1.59% of body fat percentage. The patients reached 168.2±4.57bpm of heart rate, didn't make any hypertensive response to the effort reaching an arterial pressure of 171.1±22.15mmHg x 87.5±4.18mmHg. Oxygen saturation was 98±0.71% and oxygen consumption peak was, also in average, 12.3±2.75ml.kg.min-1. Conclusion: It was verifi ed that there was no oxygen saturation drop nor hypertensive response and all of the patients reached the maximum heart rate.
