Effect of Exposure to a Short-Duration Sound on the Stress Response of Chickens

Abstract: Chickens were subjected to the sound produced by banging on a metal pail (104 decibels) for 30 seconds. Heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratios began to rise 18 hours later, reaching their maximum value (0.62) in 20 hours and returning to pre-stress values after 30 hours. Neither resistance to Escherichia coli challenge infection nor antibody response were altered.

“…It increased from 0.41 ± 0.07 ng/ml in control broilers to 3.20 ± 0.69 ng/ml and 4.74 ± 0.87 ng/ml in broilers exposed to noise of 80 dB and 100 dB, respectively, whereas plasma corticosterone concentration in broilers that were placed in the test room and not exposed to noise was 1.32 ± 0.34 ng/ml. Stress response induced by exposure to a sound of 104 dB for 30 sec was reported in chickens also by Gross (1990). The increased level of plasma corticosterone in broilers before slaughter is not only indicative of impaired welfare but it also has an impact on the quality of meat.…”

“…Book and Bradley (1990) found panic and aggression in turkeys exposed to noise. The relationship between noise and indicators of stress in poultry was studied by Borg (1981), McFarlane and Curtis (1989), McFarlane et al (1989b), Gross (1990), Maxwell (1993), Lazarević et al (2000), and Campo et al (2005). Noise also has an important psychological component, and therefore is a potential source of fear in animals.…”

“…For haematological examinations, the samples were stabilized by heparin. Blood samples were obtained after 20 hours because the H/L ratio response to short-duration stress peaks after 20 h (Gross 1990;Zulkifli et al 2002).…”

“…Unusually low levels of environmental stimuli are characterized by H/L ratios between 0.2 and 0.3, demonstrating the need for some stress (stimulation) in order to maintain more efficient biochemical activity. Gross (1990) reports that exposure to a short-term physical stressor resulted in changes in blood profiles such as fluctuation in H/L ratios within 18 h. The response peaked at about 20 h and returned to normal at about 30 h.…”
