Effect of extrusion conditions on rigid PVC foam

Abstract: There is a growing demand for rigid vinyl foam as a wood replacement in window frames, blinds, trimming and other applications. While rigid vinyl foam has existed for many years, additional understanding of its processability and required conditions for good quality extruded profile would be helpful. This paper examines the effect of extrusion conditions, such as melt temperature, screw speed, and drawdown on process morphology of rigid vinyl foam and the properties of the extruded profile, including density, … Show more

“…The density variation was insignificant (within 2.5%) up to 1.7 phr CBA content with the DDR increased from 1.0 to 1.3, whereas it was up to 4.5% to 13% above 2.5 phr CBA content. Past studies showed that the density was nearly independent of the DDR for PVC 16 and the rice-hull-filled PE 22 foamed profiles at a no or low gas content, which agrees with this finding. The density reduction with increased DDR could be possibly due to the formation of more voids from volatiles and water contained in WF at high-temperature extrusion.…”

“…As seen in Table 5, higher screw speed gave the foam lower void fraction, smaller average cell size and higher cell density. This conclusion was also reported by references [19,[39][40]. The cell density reached 2.2 3 10 6 cells/cm 3 at 100 rpm.…”

“…Rigid PVC foams are obtained mainly by conventional foaming with chemical foaming agents (CFAs) [2]. The disadvantages of the conventional plastic foams are their large cell size and the lack of uniformity of those cells.…”
