Effect of Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Modified by Citric and Oleic Acids on the Physicochemical and Magnetic Properties of Hybrid Electrospun P(VDF-TrFE) Scaffolds

Abstract: This study considers a fabrication of magnetoactive scaffolds based on a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) and 5, 10, and 15 wt.% of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles modified with citric (CA) and oleic (OA) acids by solution electrospinning. The synthesized Fe3O4-CA and Fe3O4-OA nanoparticles are similar in particle size and phase composition, but differ in zeta potential values and magnetic properties. Pure P(VDF-TrFE) scaffolds as well as composites with Fe3O4-CA and Fe3O4-O… Show more

“…The total surface energy (σ) consists of dispersive (σ d ) and polar (σ p ) components related to van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonds, respectively, in a material. A pronounced increase in σ p from 47.2 ± 1.2 to 64.2 ± 2.0 mN/m was observed after the addition of Fe 3 O 4 –CA to the conduits (Table ), indicating possible intermolecular hydrogen bonding between polar CO groups of PHB and hydrogen atoms in free carboxyl groups of Fe 3 O 4 –CA . σ d for PHB/Fe 3 O 4 –CA is also higher as compared to PHB, implying dipolar interactions between the filler and PHB macromolecules owing to the presence of polarized carboxyl groups on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 –CA .…”

“…In addition to the presence of the Fe 3 O 4 –CA agglomerates, possible filler/polymer interactions may restrain the mobility of PHB chains, thereby diminishing the PHB/Fe 3 O 4 –CA crystallinity. The most probable interaction between Fe 3 O 4 –CA MNPs and PHB may be the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the polar CO groups of PHB and hydrogen atoms of free carboxyl groups in CA . Moreover, the presence of these carboxyl groups on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 –CA MNPs allows for dipolar interactions between the fillers and PHB macromolecules…”

“…Botvin et al. [ 124 ] used magnetic fillers—magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles as fillers and modified the surface of the fillers with citric acid (CA) and oleic acid (OA) modifiers. The effect was to have both hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, while also reducing the aggregation tendency of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles.…”

“…Currently, the development of magnetic nanomaterials is receiving increased research attention related to the combination in the composition and the appearance of new unique physico-chemical properties in the system that allow them to be used as magnetically active materials [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. One of the ways to obtain the magnetic characteristics of nanostructures may be to modify the surface of the obtained magnetic polymer materials.…”
