Effect of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation Combined With Mediterranean Diet on Insulin Sensitivity in Subjects With Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract: BackgroundRecent studies demonstrate that a Mediterranean diet has beneficial metabolic effects in metabolic syndrome subjects. Since we have shown that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from lean donors exerts beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity, in the present trial, we investigated the potential synergistic effects on insulin sensitivity of combining a Mediterranean diet with donor FMT in subjects with metabolic syndrome.DesignTwenty-four male subjects with metabolic syndrome were put on a Medite… Show more

“… 55 However, the beneficial effect of FMT on insulin sensitivity parameters was not always observed. 56 The role of nutrition itself remains considered as the major driver of insulin sensitivity and entails the development of complementary studies on FMT implementation (donor effect).…”

“…It is important to note that the interaction between dietary interventions (such as the Mediterranean Diet) and the gut microbiota on CMD have been investigated with interesting findings [ 75 , 76 ]. A comparison between these effects and the specific effects of a ketogenic diet on gut microbiota modulation is interesting, but beyond the scope of this review.…”

“…FMT potently 'rebuilds' the gut microflora's dynamic homeostasis, structure, and diversity by transferring healthy gut microbiota into recipients. The significant relationship between gut microbiota dysregulation and many clinical conditions has enabled FMT to treat multiple clinical conditions, such as autoimmune [110], neurodegenerative [111], CDI [112], and metabolic disorders [113][114][115]. The most successful clinical application of FMT is currently to treat CDI with up to a 90% success rate and with a good safety profile [116], as no short-or long-term adverse effects have been described [117].…”
