Effect of Fiber Orientation on Mechanical Properties of Kenaf-Reinforced Polymer Composite

Abstract: The increase of environmental awareness has led to interest in the use of materials with eco-friendly attributes. In this study, a sandwich composite was developed from polyester and kenaf fiber with various orientation arrangements. Polyester/kenaf sandwich composite was fabricated through the combination of a hand lay-up process and cold compression. The tensile, flexural, and Izod impact tests of the sandwich composites were evaluated by using a universal tensile tester and an impact tester. The thermal sta… Show more

“…Since most natural fibers used today are at the leading edge of material technology, an intensive devel-opment of their uses in advanced applications is becoming harder to ignore. The main advantages of natural fibers over synthetic fibers are their relatively low mass and specific density, high specific strength, renewability, biodegradability, and abundance [1,2]. The use of natural fiber composites is actually referred to the utilization of natural sources in polymer industry, reducing the dependence on petroleum resources and the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions due to decreasing need for plastic burning [3].…”

“…However, these promising fibers also have several drawbacks, such as their hydrophilic nature, which leads to the problem of incompatibility with some polymeric matrices. “…Natural fibers obtained from sustainable sources or derived from agro-wastes suffer a large variability ranging from the age and harvesting time of plant, climate and geographical conditions, variation in processing methods, and so on [82,83]. As a result, a possible variation in the quality of end-products has emerged.…”

“…Advanced composites appear to be promising for implant applications on account of their high degree of biocompatibility with respect to strength and stiffness. The fiber orientation plays an important role in the mechanical behavior of the composite materials [7,8]. The change in fiber orientation incites a change in mechanical properties of the composite materials such as tensile strength, elastic and shears modulus [9].…”
