Effect of Fillets on Stress Concentrations in Cylindrical Shells With Step Changes in Outside Diameter

Abstract: The effect of varying the radii of circumferential fillets in the transition region of cylindrical shells with a step change in outside diameter and loaded with internal pressure has been examined by means of finite element analyses for 27 models. Parameters studied were ratios of the thickness of the thicker section to the thickness of the thinner section, ratios of the fillet radius to thickness of the thinner section, and ratios of the inside radius of the cylindrical shell to the thickness of the thinner s… Show more

“…Some researchers (see, for example, reference [7]) define the SCF as the ratio of the critical stress, at the concentration region, to the critical stress away from the concentration region, where the 'critical stress' is defined as the maximum component of stress. Other workers (see, for example, reference [8]) have calculated SCF values separately for meridional and hoop stresses. In this paper, the critical SCF K tcr is obtained by dividing the peak fillet stress by the critical (maximum) nominal stress in the tube.…”

“…In addition, comparisons were made of experimental and theoretical results for two experimental models and between duplicate analyses made using two different finite-element computer programs. The study was completed and a report was published (11).…”
