“…Upon thawing, the ice crystals melt, leaving behind pores between cross-linked polymer regions. Repeated freeze-thawing cycles of the polymer solution lead to the formation of crystallites that act as cross-linking sites, so a hydrogel with a high swelling capacity can be produced [125]. AgNP-polymer composite hydrogels can be prepared by introducing pre-formed AgNPs into a water-soluble polymer matrix, or the formation of AgNPs in-situ through chemical reduction in aqueous polymer solution.…”

“…Herein, we developed a POCT platform based on hydrogel microneedle patches, which can extract skin ISF, recover target biomarkers and detect biomarkers, for POCT based on skin ISF ( Figure ). The hydrogel microneedle patch was made of PVA and chitosan (CS), in which the biocompatible PVA can form a 3D network by repeated freezing and thawing without any cross‐linking agents, and CS can improve the porosity and water absorption capacity of hydrogel . The phase transition property and 3D network structure of the PVA/CS hydrogel make the microneedle both easy penetration into skin and extraction of sufficient ISF.…”

“…The 3D matrix of chemical hydrogel has cross-links, which are formed by covalent bonds; in the other class, the 3D matrix is formed by physical interactions. Such physical interactions arise due to the presence of (i) groups with opposite electrical charges (electrostatic interactions, as in the case of polyelectrolyte complexes or PECs) and (ii) dipolar or hydrophobic groups (that works for physical hydrogel forming, as is the case of the hydrogels obtained by the process of freezing-thawing) [23,24]. Thus, the use cross-linking agents is not needed for preparing physical hydrogels.…”
