Effect of glycine as an impurity on the properties of Epsomite single crystals

Abstract: Epsomite (MgSO 4 .7H 2 O) is a hydrogen bonded crystal having a wide range of applications in various fields. Pure and glycine added Epsomite (a total of six) single crystals have been grown and characterized in order to investigate the effect of glycine as an impurity on the properties of Epsomite crystals. The densities and lattice parameters observed indicate that the impurity molecules have entered into the crystal matrix. The grown crystals exhibit good optical transparency in the wavelength range 210-1100… Show more

“…To our knowledge, no systematic studies of Gly crystallization in freezing saline environments have been performed. Since Gly is capable of incorporating into inorganic hydrated mineral structures (Kavitha & Mahadevan, 2013), such studies could provide new insights into the nature and origin of the non-ice surface mineralogy of icy bodies as well as the early prebiotic stages involved in the origin of life as discussed in Section 4.4.…”

“…2 The glycine molecule is found to form many compounds with metal sulfates, metal halogenides and acids. The epsomite (MgSO4:7H2O), as a source of Mg2+ ions has wide applications in medicine (acute management of cardiac arrhythmia) and agriculture (fertilizer) 3 . This material, when doped with selected activators yields efficient for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications.…”
