Effect of Growth Hormone in Patients with Moderate to Severe Intrauterine Adhesions

Abstract

Purpose Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) is one of the obstetrics and gynecology diseases that affect female fertility. The treatment of hysteroscopic adhesiolysis in combination with postoperative hormone therapy has not gained satisfactory effects yet. Since growth hormone (GH) promotes endometrial growth, we wanted to explore the therapeutic effect of GH on patients with moderate to severe IUA clinically. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the data of 18 IUA patients, who underwent transcervical resection of adhesion (TCRA) procedure followed by estrogen-progestin sequential therapy and GH administration, with 16 patients who did not receive GH therapy. Patients’ endometria were reexamined and their menstrual recovery was followed up. Results There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in basic characteristics, preoperative American Fertility Society (AFS) score, endometrial thickness difference, and menstrual recovery. On average, patients treated with GH showed a more pronounced increase in endometrial thickness change and a better menstrual pattern, although under the basis of a slightly higher preoperative AFS. Conclusion It appeared GH did no difference in moderate to severe IUA. More data are worth accumulating to determine the role of GH in IUA treatment.
