Effect of Gum Arabic powder on the mechanical properties of denture base acrylic

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to improve the mechanical properties of denture base material using various concentrations of natural biopolymer, i.e., Gum Arabic (GA). Methods: This experimental study was conducted at the Dental Health Department of the College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from May 2022 to July 2022. After obtaining exemption from the institutional review board, the powdered GA was added in ratios of weight 5, 10, and 20% to PMMA heat-cured acrylic… Show more

“…The presence of excessive voids and gaps within the material can act as stress concentration points and weaken the overall strength [ 29 ]. GA, being a hydrophilic substance [ 15 ], has the potential to impede the hydration process of the cement. In GICs, the water content is crucial for proper setting and cross-linking reactions [ 30 ].…”

“…Careful consideration of the mechanical weaknesses of GIC luting material has led us to postulate a study that investigates the potential benefits of incorporating Gum Arabic (GA) powder into commercially available GIC formulations. GA, a naturally derived biopolymer holds promise for enhancing the mechanical properties of GIC when introduced into its powdered composition [ 15 ]. Notably, GA possesses inherent antimicrobial activity and serves as a non-toxic natural excipient utilized for sustained drug release [ 16 ].…”

“…It is also a non-toxic natural compound utilized in the sustained release of medications to deliver bioactive. 10 , 11 GA could be a good substitute for traditional synthetic fibers used to reinforce denture bases. It is postulated that the addition of gum Arabic to PMMA may bond forces of the PMMA atoms.…”
