Background Seed aging in soybean is a serious challenge for agronomic production and germplasm preservation. However, its genetic basis remains largely unclear in soybean. Unraveling the genetic mechanism involved in seed aging, and enhancing seed storability is an imperative goal for soybean breeding. The aim of this study is to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) using high-density genetic linkage maps of soybean for seed storability. In this regard, two recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations derived from Zhengyanghuangdou × Meng 8206 (ZM6) and Linhefenqingdou × Meng 8206 (LM6) crosses were evaluated for three seed-germination related traits viz., germination rate (GR), normal seedling length (SL) and normal seedling fresh weight (FW) under natural and artificial aging conditions to map QTLs for seed storability. Results A total of 34 QTLs, including 13 QTLs for GR, 11 QTLs for SL and 10 QTLs for FW, were identified on 11 chromosomes with the phenotypic variation ranged from 7.30 to 23.16% under both aging conditions. All these QTLs were novel, and 21 of these QTLs were clustered in five QTL-rich regions on four different chromosomes viz., Chr3, Chr5, Chr17 &Chr18, among them the highest concentration of seven and six QTLs were found in “QTL hotspot A” (Chr17) and “QTL hotspot B” (Chr5), respectively. Furthermore, QTLs within all the five QTL clusters are linked to at least two studied traits, which is also supported by highly significant correlation between the three germination-related traits. QTLs for seed-germination related traits in “QTL hotspot B” were found in both RIL populations and aging conditions, and also QTLs underlying “QTL hotspot A” are identified in both RIL populations under artificial aging condition. These are the stable genomic regions governing the inheritance of seed storability in soybean, and will be the main focus for soybean breeders. Conclusion This study uncovers the genetic basis of seed storability in soybean. The newly identified QTLs provides valuable information, and will be main targets for fine mapping, candidate gene identification and marker-assisted breeding. Hence, the present study is the first report for the comprehensive and detailed investigation of genetic architecture of seed storability in soybean. Seed shattering refers to the natural shedding of seeds when they ripe, a phenomenon typically observed in wild and weedy plant species. The timing and extent of this phenomenon varies considerably among plant species. Seed shattering is primarily a genetically controlled trait; however, it is significantly influenced by environmental conditions, management practices and their interactions, especially in agro-ecosystems. This trait is undesirable in domesticated crops where consistent efforts have been made to minimize it through conventional and molecular breeding approaches. However, this evolutionary trait serves as an important fitness and survival mechanism for most weeds that utilize it to ensure efficient dispersal of their seeds, paving the way for persistent soil seedbank development and sustained future populations. Weeds have continuously evolved variations in seed shattering as an adaptation under changing management regimes. High seed retention is common in many cropping weeds where weed maturity coincides with crop harvest, facilitating seed dispersal through harvesting operations, though some weeds have notoriously high seed shattering before crop harvest. However, high seed retention in some of the most problematic agricultural weed species such as annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum), wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum), and weedy amaranths (Amaranthus spp.) provides an opportunity to implement innovative weed management approaches such as harvest weed seed control, which aims at capturing and destroying weed seeds retained at crop harvest. The integration of such management options with other practices is important to avoid the rapid evolution of high seed shattering in target weed species. Advances in genetics and molecular biology have shown promise for reducing seed shattering in important crops, which could be exploited for manipulating seed shattering in weed species. Future research should focus on developing a better understanding of various seed shattering mechanisms in plants in relation to changing climatic and management regimes.

Defoliation was the major factor which directly affected to maize seed yield and quality basis on source-sink relationship. Thus, the objectives were to study the effect of source-sink balance management on corn seed vigor and storability and to determine the effect of defoliation treatments on maize yield, yield components and produced seed germination traits. The experiment was arranged basis on Split-Plot in Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Main plot was the pattern of leave cutting with 5 levels: D1 = control, (without defoliating), D2 = complete defoliation, D3 = defoliating only under the ear, D4 = remain 2 top leaves, D5 = remain ear leaf. Sup-plot was leaf cutting dates which were C1 = 7 days after silking, C2 = 10 days after silking, C3 = 13 days after silking and C4 = 16 days after silking. Complete defoliation severely reduced ear weight, row number per ear, seed number per ear and 100 -seed weight (P<5%). Defoliation treatments had much more significantly affected on produced seed germination and seed vigor traits. Leaf defoliation intensity and leaf position affected total dry matter. Conclusion, the leaf defoliation only below ears was useful for source-sink balance management, because it promoted the seed qualities and vigor following to principle of parasitic sink elimination.

Abstract: . This might be due to more food reserve and dry matter accumulation on the seed at later harvest. However, seeds harvested in 80 and 85 DAE were also found good for seed yield and seed quality.
