Cornstover, garbage compost, and cowdung were added to an Alfisol (Iwo series) at the rates of 0, 23, 69, and 115 Mg ha -1 and incubated for 4 weeks in the greenhouse prior to sowing cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) var. Ife Brown]. Two successive plantings were made per pot. Harvesting of the plants was at onset of flowering, 42 days after planting. Nitrogen (N) fixed was assessed using the N 2 difference method. Soil reaction (pH), organic carbon (C), and tissue N contents were increased by all the organic amendments. At both harvests, dry matter yields were significantly enhanced by garbage compost and cowdung. While garbage compost and cowdung increased the amounts of N 2 fixed, the efficiency of N 2 fixation was higher in the cornstover treatments. The cornstover additions also significantly increased nodule size and number. These results suggest that organic amendments would benefit N 2 fixation especially in soils low in indigenous organic matter. The beneficial effects were in the order: cowdung > garbage compost > cornstover. To enhance N 2 fixation in cowpea, a rate of 23 Mg ha -1 of these organic amendments is suggested. 2455

Field experiments were conducted for three years at Pulses and Oilseeds Research Station, Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal, India during rabi 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 to study the effects of farm yard manure (FYM), phosphorus and sulphur on yield parameters, yield, nodulation, nutrient uptake and quality of chickpea. The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomized block design with three replications having twelve treatment combinations viz. two levels of FYM (F0-0 t ha-1, F1 -5 t ha-1) as factor A , three levels of phosphorus (P0 -0 kg ha-1, P30 -30 kg ha-1, P60 -60 kg ha-1) as factor B and two levels of sulphur (S0 -0 kg ha-1, S20 -20 kg ha-1) as factor C. Experimental results revealed that yield attributing characters, yield and protein content of chickpea were significantly influenced by FYM, phosphorus, sulphur and interaction effects of these three factors. Significantly higher seed yield (2458.03 kg ha-1) was obtained with the application of FYM 5 t ha-1 over itâ€™s non application. Application of 60 kg ha-1 phosphorus recorded significantly higher seed yield (2735.50 kg ha-1) of chickpea cultivar Anuradha. Application of 20 kg ha-1 sulphur recorded significantly higher seed yield (2532.32 kg ha-1) over itâ€™s non application in a sulphur deficient soil. Among the interaction effects application of 60 kg ha-1 phosphorus and 20 kgha-1 sulphur in Farm yard manure(5 t ha-1 ) treated plot recorded highest seed yield (2979.3 kg ha-1) . Application of sulphur 20 kg ha-1 increased the nodule no. by 14.4 %. Application of 60 kg ha-1 phosphorus and 20 kg ha-1 sulphur in Farm yard manure treated plot (5 t ha-1) increased the nodule no. by 62.3%. Varying levels of phosphorus along with sulphur and FYM significantly improved the nutrient uptake by chickpea in a sulphur deficient soil. Application of 60 kg ha-1 phosphorus and 20 kg ha-1 sulphur in Farm yard manure treated plot (5 t ha-1) along with recommended dose of nitrogen and potassium proved to be the best treatment combination for increasing the productivity of chickpea and thereby increasing the pulse production of the country.

In a 3‐year experiment on a Typic Haplustert low in soil test sulphur (S), the response to applied farmyard manure (FYM) and S was studied in terms of the nodule production, nodule dry weight, chlorophyll content, dry matter production and seed yield of soybean. FYM was applied to soybean at four levels (0–16 t ha−1). S as gypsum was also applied at four levels (0–60 kg ha−1) to both soybean and wheat every year. Both total and active nodule production, nodule dry weight, dry matter production and seed yield of soybean were increased significantly by the application of both FYM and S. However, the proportion of total nodules to active nodules fell sharply for applications higher than 8 t FYM and 40 kg S ha−1.
