Understanding cottonseeds’ basic physical parameters and compressive mechanical properties is necessary in seed cotton packing and cottonseed processing. In this study, the basic physical parameters of three cottonseed varieties (Huiyuan 720, Xinluzao 61, and Xinluzao 74) under different moisture contents (6%, 9%, 12%, and 15%) were measured. These parameters include 1000-grain weight, triaxial dimension, and sphericity. The effects of different moisture, varieties, and compression orientation (horizontal and vertical) on the compressive mechanical properties of the cottonseed were studied, and the variance analysis of the experimental data showed that the triaxial dimension, 1000-grain weight, arithmetic mean diameter, and geometric mean diameter of cottonseeds of the same variety increased with an increase in moisture content. Extremely significant differences (p < 0.01) were found in the physical parameters among different varieties. The main factors affecting crushing force and apparent elastic modulus are moisture content, variety, and compression orientation. For deformation, the main factors are moisture content, compression orientation, and variety. Moreover, compression orientation, moisture content, and variety are the main factors affecting failure energy. The results obtained that the crushing force and apparent elastic modulus decreased, deformation increased, and failure energy decreased first and then increased with the increase in moisture content under the same cottonseed variety. The results also provided the basic physical parameters for the design parameter optimization of seed cotton harvesting and processing machinery.

G RAIN velocity probes were developed and used to measure the velocities of grain on a rotating disk and in a free-fall grain stream. Each probe consisted of two photo-detectors spaced at a fixed distance and four to seven infrared-emitting diodes. By cross-correlating the signals generated by the two detectors, the transit time required for the grain kernels to travel the distance between the detectors was determined. From the values of transit time and the known distance between the detectors, velocities of grain ranging from 2 to 9 m/s, were measured within an accuracy of ±10%.

Abstract. Cottonseed damage during processing is a growing concern for cotton ginners and cottonseed oil processors. A test to evaluate the durability of seed samples would be beneficial to breeders and ginners to help reduce problems associated with seed damage. Toward this goal, cottonseed fracture resistance was studied with a tensile tester fitted with an adapter to apply compressive force. Seeds cracked with more compressive force when oriented vertically in the tester than when oriented horizontally. Seeds had a greater fracture resistance when they were drier. Even differences in environmental relative humidity (35% to 65%) were enough to affect the testing, indicating that cottonseed requires conditioning to obtain consistent results. Treating the seed with sulfuric acid to remove surface linters did not affect the seed’s tendency to fracture, but significant differences were discernible among seed samples with different genetic backgrounds and production histories. Because several individual seeds needed to be tested to achieve representative results, the compressive fracture resistance may not be the most convenient tool for determining the potential for seed damage during processing. A better test might be some form of mechanical damaging device (e.g., a shaker or roller mill) that would allow faster analysis of a representative seed sample.
