Effect of home-based rehabilitation for hip fracture: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract: The results of the meta-analysis showed that home-based rehabilitation has considerable positive effects on physical functioning after hip fracture. Home-based rehabilitation is therefore recommended for hip fracture.

“…Systematic reviews have demonstrated that HR is effective for improving basic activities of daily living (ADL) of individuals who have suffered a stroke within 1 year and patients with musculoskeletal disabilities 2,3) . HR is also effective at improving transfer and balance 4,5) , reducing the duration of hospitalization, and improving ADL, with efficacy similar to or greater than that obtained by rehabilitation services in hospital [6][7][8] . Systematic reviews have also shown the possibility that HR could be effective at improving social participation, but no definitive findings have been obtained and further studies are required to confirm this 4,7,9) .…”

“…Over recent decades other models of home-based rehabilitation (HBR) have been developed in addition to the classical model. Two systematic reviews were published recently ( 8 , 9 ) that evaluated the effectiveness of HBR for patients with fractures of the femoral neck, but most studies included in the review related to ongoing rehabilitation processes and not intensive rehabilitation immediately after surgery. Table 1 shows a summary of the main findings of six studies ( 10 15 ) that compared the effectiveness of HBR with that of standard inpatient rehabilitation (IR).…”

“…Kuijlaars et al 34) noted that there was no evidence to support the benefit of home-based exercise therapy after hip fracture for most functional outcomes and activities. On the other hand, Wu et al 35) reported that home-based rehabilitation has considerable positive effects on physical functioning after hip fractures. The latter meta-analysis included more recent studies than the former one; however, it is unclear which meta-analysis is more reliable because the methods and outcome measurements differed.…”
