PurposeTechnical differences may explain why elite hurdles specialists (EHS) and elite decathletes (ED) perform differently in the 110-metre hurdles. This study aims to compare the hurdle-unit kinematic parameters in EHS and ED.MethodsA total of 20 male athletes were recruited, including 10 EHS (age: 20.9 ± 2.2 years, body mass: 76.9 ± 7.0 kg, height: 1.85 ± 0.05 m) and 10 ED (age: 20.8 ± 2.27 years, body mass: 87.7 ± 6.9 kg, height: 1.91 ± 0.03 m). Their three-dimensional movement was analysed for hurdling sequences over the whole hurdle-crossing phase and the entire cycle of the first stride after the hurdle, with spatial, temporal, and angular characteristics compared between groups.ResultsEHS were characterised by faster hurdle crossing (p = 0.002), shorter stride length over the hurdle (p = 0.002), and a shorter support phase in the first stride post-hurdle (p = 0.005). The centre of mass (CM) path of ED was higher than that of EHS (p = 0.003). EHS attack the hurdle with the lead leg’s knee significantly more flexed (p = 0.001) and after crossing the hurdle, regain contact with the ground with the lead leg more flexed at the hip level (p = 0.004), the trunk more inclined forward (p = 0.01), and a relatively smaller positioning angle of the supporting leg (p = 0.021).ConclusionsEHS can be identified by their reduced impulse time, abbreviated take-off phase over the hurdle, and accelerated landing. Furthermore, EHS achieved optimum speed between obstacles faster, resulting in less speed loss and enhanced performance.

This study aimed to clarify the kinetics of the relative vertical momentum to the proximal joint of each free limb and their contribution to the increase in the centre of mass height at the take-off of hurdle clearance, as well as their relationship with take-off variables. Thirteen male hurdlers cleared one hurdle at the height of their centre of mass, and their attempts were filmed using six high-speed cameras. The hurdle height was 96.54 ± 2.63 cm (55.35 ± 0.29% of body height). The approach distance was set at 15 m and adjusted by each hurdler in the range of 10–50 cm so as not to involve any noticeable step length adjustment before the take-off. The combined free limb relative vertical momentum tended to increase until mid-support and was maintained until the toe off. The smaller the whole-body vertical momentum at the toe off and the increase in relative vertical momentum of the lead leg during the take-off, the higher the take-off velocity, the shorter the support time, and the smaller the deceleration. The higher the relative vertical momentum of the forward swing arm during touchdown and the smaller the relative vertical momentum increase of the combined free limb and the forward swing arm during the take-off, the smaller the deceleration. In conclusion, hurdlers should reduce the increase in whole-body vertical momentum at the take-off by suppressing the increase in relative vertical momentum of the lead leg and the forward swing arm.

The use of exercise in sports must be right on target on the physical component needed. Similarly, hurdling not only utilizes speed, but requires strength to get maximum results. The purpose of the study was to analyze the effects arising from the use of Running ABC exercises combined with Bodyweight Training. The study design used a two-group post-test pre-test of 22 trained male subjects enrolled in the study. The first stage includes initial tests to see initial ability and as a basis for determining the treatment group which is divided into two groups with ordinally paired patterns A-B-B-A for group alignment. Group 1 was given Running ABC exercises, and Group 2 Running ABC exercises were combined with Bodyweight Training. Each group was trained for 16 meetings. The test instrument used is a 50yard sprint over obstacles by measuring the speed of the athlete's travel time. The data analysis technique used was a difference test with IBM SPSS 24 statistics. The results of the study were obtained from data analysis there was a significant difference between group 1 who only used Running ABC exercises with group 2 who used Running ABC exercises combined with Bodyweight Training exercises with a difference value of 0.043<0.05. This means that running abc (agility, balance, and coordination) and body weight training are significant in increasing the running speed of hurdling athletes, but combining body weight training and running abc (agility, balance and coordination) is more effective than training using only one type of physical component exercise. By combining running abc exercises and body weight training, trainers can improve their athletes' overall fitness and technique, effectively improving balance, coordination, and functional strength.
