Effect of hydroalcoholic Echium amoenum extract on scopolamine-induced learning and memory impairment in rats

Abstract: Context: Scopolamine, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, causes memory loss that resembles Alzheimer's disease (AD). Echium amoenum L. (Boraginaceae) is a famous medicinal plant of Iran that is traditionally used as a sedative and mood enhancer. Objective: This study evaluates the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of E. amoenum flowers on scopolamine-induced memory impairment in rats.Materials and methods: Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups. “…The phenolic compounds like quercetin, morin, and rutin identified in the methanolic extracts of R. moschata have also been reported previously in the methanolic extract of Silybum marianum (L.) seeds (Nazir et al 2017). Current results were in agreement with a previously reported study that these phenolic compounds may be used as AChE inhibitors (Rabiei and Setorki 2018). In previous reported study, 12 phenolic compounds like malic acid, gallic acid, vitamin C, chlorogenic acid, epigallocatechin gallate, quercetin, morin, ellagic acid, catechin hydrate, rutin, pyrogallol, and mandelic acid were identified in the fruit of Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb.…”

“…35 Scopolamine causes memory impairment and disturbed locomotor activity. 36,37 Piracetam is a standard drug used for cognition enhancement that improves the functioning of ACh and implicated in the memory process. 38 Rotarod and actophotometer experimental models are used to determine the motor coordination of rodents.…”
