Effect of Echium amoenum Fisch. et Mey a Traditional Iranian Herbal Remedy in an Experimental Model of Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract: Acute pancreatitis is a morbid inflammatory condition of pancreas with limited specific therapy. Enhanced oxidative stress plays an important role in induction and progression of acute pancreatitis. So reducing oxidative stress may relieve this pathogenic process. Echium amoenum Fisch. and Mey has been implemented in Iranian folk medicine for several centuries. Antioxidant, analgesic, immunomodulatory, and anxiolytic properties of E. amoenum suggest that this plant may have beneficial effects in the management… Show more

“…reduced amylase and lipase activity, TNF-alpha, MPO activity, and pathological alterations, which are markers of pancreatitis. Action of diazepam on PBRs was already reported as being related to its effects on acute inflammation [20]. This is in accordance with the results obtained by Lazzarini et al which demonstrated that the diazepam was effective to protect against carrageenan-induced acute inflammatory paw edema [11].…”

“…The extracts significantly reduced the neutrophil migration in cerulein‐induced AP (Conforti et al , ; Minaiyan et al , ). Similarly, E. amoenum protected mice against cerulein‐induced AP by its antioxidant, antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory effects (Abed et al , ). This report warrants for further in detail mechanistic studies to be carried out to assess the pharmacological efficacy of these folks plant of the middle‐east.…”
